Tonight Matters: Five Questions

MP3 PDF

What are the five most important questions Christians should be able to answer?

On Wednesday, January 25th I was interviewed by hosts Matt Buff and Jim Fletcher of the Rapture Ready Radio show, broadcast over BlogTalkRadio. During the second hour of their two hour live show we talked about the growing interest in Bible prophecy, the importance of teaching the Creation, Lamb & Lion Ministries’ new ministry initiatives in reaching people for Christ, the top five questions every Christian should know, the rise of the Muslim Brotherhood, and how Christians should respond to non-Christian candidates when it comes time to vote. Matt Buff also simultaneously chatted online with people listening to the show, taking questions from the audience.

Five Questions Every Christian Should Know

Matt Buff: The foundation of Biblical knowledge is key. So, where should a Christian start? What five questions should believers know?

Nathan Jones: Firstly, “Who is Jesus Christ?” I would say for a Christian to answer that they need to start with the Gospel of John. Everybody who is coming to faith in the Lord I believe should begin with John. When I was a decision counselor back up at Southeast Christian Church in Louisville, we would recommend reading the book of John so the new Christians could understand who Jesus is. Getting to know Jesus is of the utmost importance.

Secondly, “Why was I created?” The purpose of why we were created is to do good works which God has prepared in advance for us to do (Eph. 2:10). That’s what God has for us to do while on earth. Now, for eternity…

Thirdly, “What is the purpose of life?” The purpose of all of human history is to get us back in that right relationship with God. Back in the Garden of Eden, God talked with Adam and Eve, He walked with them, and He had fellowship with them. There was nothing between them hampering that one-on-one relationship, but when sin entered the world that relationship was broken. All of human history is for getting us back to that point where those who choose God will live in eternity with Him. We will again walk with Him and talk with Him and have fellowship with Him once more.

Fourthly, “How do I get saved?” This ties into the first question, because knowing who Jesus is is the most important part of knowing and claiming that purpose in life. You can do the religiosity, that is something, but it’s the relationship with Jesus that counts.

This question also ties into, “Is there a Heaven?” “Am I a sinner?” You know, all the foundational questions about salvation are the important ones tied into how one gets saved.

Fifthly, “Can I trust the Bible for my faith in God?” If you can’t trust the Bible you won’t believe the truth that’s taught, and all the other questions above fall to the wayside as unanswerable.

Matt Buff: Amen! That’s exactly right on. We have witnessed so many times where people aren’t even sure about Heaven and how to explain what it truly is.

Know to Go

Jim Fletcher: Yes, I do agree with both of you. In fact, I was thinking of when I was growing up in my youth group in the Bible Belt that to be perfectly honest in hindsight I didn’t know really much about our own denomination. I really didn’t know much about the faith. Now I think it’s critical to really ground people in these questions and to know the answers.

Nathan Jones: You’ve got to know why you believe, otherwise, where are you going? There’s no goal in life, no target. I find a lot of kids here know a lot about doing good works and going out there and making a difference. They paint a house and feed the poor, and that’s all good stuff that Jesus told us to do. But, if they don’t know why they are doing all of that in the first place and what the purpose for it is, as well as what the objective is in life without the eternal perspective, then we roam around aimlessly like we don’t know what we are doing.

For example, a football team knows what it needs to do — they need to reach the end zone. As Christians we reach the end zone by reaching people for Christ. But, we have to know the plays and we have to know how to get down the field and to work together as a team to get to the common goal. That means starting with the playbook, which for a Christian is the Bible.

Matt Buff: If you want to be in the NFL and you get drafted by a team, the first thing you have to learn is the playbook. That’s done before anything else. If you go to a new job in sales or whatever, you have to read the manual and do the sales training. It’s the same thing with being a Christian.

Take your daily walk with Christ by reading the Bible. I enjoy my mornings when I can sit down and read a chapter. I’m reading through the New Testament right now. That’s really a good start to the day. It’s because of the basis of truth that we have our playbook as Christians, and so reading our Bibles is very important.

In the next part of this Rapture Ready Radio interview, Matt, Jim and I will discuss what some of our leading politicians have to say concerning how we should respond to the Muslim Brotherhood.
