Has there been an increase in apostasy in the Church?

On Saturday, April 27, 2013, I was interviewed by host August Rosado of the BlogTalkRadio show Signs of the Times. August is a Bible prophecy teacher and preacher and founder of a ministry called Today in Bible Prophecy. He has and continues to be a personable guest on our television program Christ in Prophecy. He and I spent some time discussing prophetic trends and events that we are seeing occurring today.

Apostasy in the Church

August Rosado: Nathan, the next question I have for you might seem a little bit like a loaded question, but do you see an alarming increase of apostasy in the Church?

Nathan Jones: That is a sad question, August. Unfortunately, yes, there is obviously an alarming increase of apostasy in the Church. When you look at the Seven Churches of Revelation, the last church addressed by Jesus in the First Century time period during the Apostle John’s time is the Church of Laodicea. It also represents a section of time in Church history. Laodicea is the final phase, the last time. The time period before Jesus comes in the Rapture is marked as the Church of Laodicea.

The Laodicean Church was defined by its apathy for God’s Word. It was just uninterested in the Bible. It fulfills prophecies such as in 2 Thessalonians 2:3 that there will be apostasy that comes first before the Lord’s return. Matthew 24 declares in the last days many will fall away. We’re also told there that most people’s love will grow cold.

Second Timothy 4:3-4 says, “A time will come when they (Christians) will not endure sound doctrine, but wanting to have their ears tickled they will accumulate for themselves teachers in accordance to their own desires and turn away their ears from the truth, and will turn aside to myths.” And, 2 Timothy 3:5 continues, “…holding a form of godliness although they deny its power.”

Sadly, the Church today, and I’ll target mostly churches in the West, has a form of godliness. Here in the West many say we are Christian, but that really means we are cultural Christians. We believe in God, but we deny the power of God. We have taken God out, we have shrunk Him down, we have put Him in a box, and we’ve made the Gospel all about ourselves.

Christians today turn to religious leaders like Rob Bell, who are clearly blind shepherds still trying to feel around and decide where God is leading, and they have a massive amount of people behind them. Guys like Bell are leading all these people in the wrong direction, away from the Bible and God’s Word.

We also bear witness to the Church’s falling numbers. People are leaving church by the masses. Nearly 75% of kids raised in church who enter their college years drop out because they really were never taught the Gospel to begin with. They were never really saved to begin with, being merely cultural Christians.

We are seeing a terrible decline of the Church in the West. It is all but dead in Great Britain, which used to during the 1800’s be the power house of missionary sending.

Still, there is hope for the Church today. We read about all the evangelistic events that are happening in Africa and China, where the Church is growing and flourishing under persecution.

So, yes, to answer your question, there’s an alarming increase of apostasy in the Church.

In the ninth segment of August Rosado’s and my discussion of current prophetic trends and events, we will look at a number of doctrinal heresies that have infiltrated the Church in these last days as prophesied in the Bible.

  • Hey, Heresy, obviously, in some measure, has existed the length of the church. A large portion of the epistles include, to some degree, revision of false tenet and practice that was at that point in the early church in the times of the witnesses. It is the mushrooming, across the board frequency of the abandonment depicted under number 2 above, in any case, among the individuals who case to be Christians, that I accept Scripture focuses to as a particular indication of the most recent days only before the Rapture. All the best!!
