The Mighty Angels of Revelation 9 Continued

MP3: The Mighty Angels of Revelation 9
Hosts: Nathan Jones & Vic Batista

Abaddon, King Over the Angels of the Bottomless Pit

Vic Batista: We continue to study these mighty angels of Revelation who are proclaiming God’s judgments upon the world. We have moved from the Seven Seal Judgments to the Seven Trumpet Judgments, and now we are at the Fifth Trumpet Judgment found in Revelation 9. Demonic locust-looking scorpion creatures have been released from the Bottomless Pit to afflict all those who do not have the seal of God upon their foreheads. For five months they sting all those who remain in rebellion against God, and though these people wish they could die, they are not allowed to.

These demonic scorpion locusts have a king. Revelation 9:11 reads, “And they had as king over them the angel of the bottomless pit, whose name in Hebrew is Abaddon, but in Greek he has the name Apollyon.”

Satan, once Lucifer, is the head demon over all of the demonic realm. And now we are introduced to another heavy-hitting demon, a lieutenant of Satan’s we could say. His name is Abaddon, or Apollyon, where the Greeks got the god Apollo. He rules as the king over the demonic hordes that come out of the Bottomless Pit. And, he is something to be greatly feared. From the description of his kingship you have to wonder if he doesn’t almost rival Satan in his abilities and power.

God had Abaddon locked away all this time to be released at the Fifth Trumpet Judgment to be the king demon over all these locust demons. He’s a general, so to speak, that afflicts the unsaved mankind for five months during this particular judgment.

The Bottomless Pit is the great cavern which separates the two realm of Torments and Paradise. #Revelation Click To Tweet

Vic Batista: The demons having a general makes so much perfect sense because Ephesians 6 tells us that the world is in a battle and there are different levels of demonic activities, as well as angelic activities. And here in Revelation 9, that is what is being described to us.

Nathan Jones: Oh, exactly, the angelic realm has a hierarchy from king all the way to the grunt angels.

I wonder if many of the demons are insane, because when they possess people they act insane. For example, think about when Jesus traveled over the Sea of Galilee and ran into a demoniac. He raved like a wild man.

I wonder if demons have been driven mad due to their sin and separation from God over the millennia. But, we also have demons ranked all the way up to generals. They’re smart and calculating, fierce and powerful, and they lead armies. Demons have a hierarchical system just like mankind works within a hierarchy.

Vic Batista: Fascinating how Revelation 9 gives us the name of the demon king, and both in the Hebrew and also in the Greek. There were a lot of different gods that people used to worship there in Athens according to the book of Acts. The Apostle John writes both his Greek and Hebrew name.

Nathan Jones: Yes, it’s very rare that the Bible gives us the name of an angel. We know about Lucifer, which actually means “light bearer.” We know about the Archangel Michael who serves as the head of God’s armies. We know about Gabriel who is the messenger of God. But, that’s pretty much it. In Revelation, now we’ve got the name of Abaddon, or Apollyon, so we are given four angels’ names altogether in the Bible.

There are a lot of non-biblical books such as the Pseudepigraphal books which name demons and angels, but we can’t take those texts seriously because a lot of theme are fiction, or based on truth but are still fictitious.

Vic Batista: These terrifying events are going to unfold sometime in the near future, though we’re not sure exactly when, as Jesus said in Matthew 24. But, we do know that before these events occur a greater event is going to occur, and that is going to be the Rapture of the Church. So, anyone who puts their trust in Christ really doesn’t have to fear the Fifth Trumpet Judgment and other 20 judgments.

Nathan Jones: Well said! What terrible time the Tribulation is going to be. It is going to be horrific. Can you imagine living through a demonic invasion?

As Christians today during this Church age, the Lord has promises to take us off this earth beforehand. The promise is found in 1 Corinthians 15 and 1 Thessalonians 4. The Apostle Paul by the Holy Spirit assures believers in Christ that Jesus is going to take Christians off this earth and up to Heaven so that we do not have to endure the Tribulation.

Our prayers are that the reader has accepted Jesus Christ as Savior, and so you will not have to go through this time of God’s judgment. Even more wondrous, your sins are forgiven and you can live eternally with Jesus Christ.

But, according to the Bible, if you have still rejected God, then you’re sins remain and God’s wrath is still upon you, and the everlasting sentence remains death. Your future is not only destined for the Tribulation, but also to an eternity in Hell.

There is no reason to delay. Accept Jesus Christ today! He has given you the free gift of salvation, paid for by his own death on the cross. Jesus wants you to accept His sacrifice and so be saved from the penalty for your rebellion.

Vic Batista: Take advantage of the wonderful opportunity that has been set before you, and that is God’s Son, Jesus Christ. The Bible teaches in John 3:16 that, “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him will not perish but have everlasting life.” We pray that today you will turn to Christ.

In the sixteenth segment of our series “The Mighty Angels of Revelation,” we’ll continue in Revelation 9 and learn what the Sixth Trumpet Judgment Angel will unleash upon the world.
