The Mighty Angels of Daniel 11: Jordan Escapes

MP3: The Mighty Angels of Daniel 11 Forebode

Jordan Escapes

Nathan Jones: The Antichrist rules the world, but Daniel 11:41 presents an interesting caveat. “He shall also enter the Glorious Land, and many countries shall be overthrown; but these shall escape from his hand: Edom, Moab, and the prominent people of Ammon.”

Edom, Moab and Ammon were the ancient enemies of the Israelites. These distant cousins of the Jews dwelled on the east side of the Jordan River in lands three of Israel’s tribes once held. Today those lands comprise the modern-day nation of Jordan.

When the Antichrist finishes defeating the King of the South, most likely meaning Africa, he pivots back and marches through Israel where he sets up camp. But, for some reason, Jordan cannot be taken by his forces. Why?

We have to travel back a number of years before to just before the Tribulation began and look at a previous end times war called the Psalm 83 War. In that war, Israel defeats the nations of Egypt, Gaza, Syria, Lebanon and Jordan. Israel one day in the future will exert control over Jordanian territory. Some eschatologists label the greater control Israel will exert over the Middle East as Greater Israel.

As Daniel prophesies, the Antichrist cannot take control of Jordanian territory because the Jewish people already will have control over it. By the midpoint of the Tribulation, the Antichrist desecrates the Third Temple, just as Antiochus did during the Greek Empire. And, just as the Jews did during the Maccabean times, during the Tribulation many Jews will flee from Jerusalem. Theologians believe that the lands once controlled by Edom, Moab and Ammon, which today is called Jordan, is the destination the Jewish people flee to. They’ll hide out there during the second half of the Tribulation and will be supernaturally protected by God.

Vic Batista: What a most fascinating passage! Jordan contains a hidden place called Petra, which may end up being the actual hideout of the dispossessed Jewish people.

Nathan Jones: If you journey to Israel you may never make it down to Petra in Jordan because it’s quite a distance out of the way. Reserve a whole day to travel to Petra. You’ll also need Jordanian guides to get into the country.

If you can’t make it to Petra but want to see the outside facade, watch the third Indiana Jones movie, the one with the knight who guards the Holy Grail. The movie was filmed in parts of Petra.

Imagine a city carved out of the rock. The barren landscape makes it very defensible. No army can march into its valleys very easily. Petra in Jordan may be the actual location many believe where the remnant of the Jewish people will one day be kept and protected by God (Rev.12:5). “Then the woman fled into the wilderness, where she has a place prepared by God, that they should feed her there one thousand two hundred and sixty days.”

Vic Batista: Amazing how Hollywood references so many biblical motifs in movies, and yet they don’t believe in the Bible or understand its significance.

Nathan Jones: Certainly Petra doesn’t possess some thousand year old knight guarding a mythical Holy Grail. Rather, the hiding place where the Jewish remnant will one day be protected during the second half of the Tribulation stands out as far more important than a hiding place for an old cup.

Egypt Does Not Escape

Vic Batista: The mighty angel of God prophesies in Daniel 11:42, “He shall stretch out his hand against the countries, and the land of Egypt shall not escape.”

Nathan Jones: Earlier in verse 40 we read that the Antichrist battled the rebellious King of the South. In the global Tribulation context where the Antichrist’s sub-regents consist of ten kings, the King of the South would have to rule over more territory than just Egypt. During the Intertestamental time period the Ptolemaic King of the South reigned over Egypt, but in the future, this King of the South will likely be king over all of Africa.

Daniel 11:42 implies the lands of Egypt shall not escape. Egypt enslaved Israel for 400 years, but in the future the Antichrist will enslave Egypt. Even though Egypt had enslaved the Jews so many years ago, often throughout Israel’s nationhood they had turned back to Egypt for help. Once the Antichrist quells Egypt, no help can come from Egypt to aid the Jewish people. Israel cannot turn to Egypt for help. They won’t be able to turn the United States for help. The Antichrist rules the world, other than the lands Israel maintains in Jordan. Therefore, one day the Jews will become totally at the mercy of the Antichrist with no nation to turn to for aid.

Libya and Ethiopia Enslaved

Vic Batista: Daniel 11:43 reveals, “He shall have power over the treasures of gold and silver, and over all the precious things of Egypt; also the Libyans and Ethiopians shall follow at his heels.”

Let’s translate these countries into more modern names. The Antichrist shall have power over the treasures of gold, silver, and over all the precious commodities once owned by Egypt. Once the Antichrist defeats the King of the South, his dominion over Africa will also include subduing the nations of Libya and Ethiopia. In the past, these two nations actually covered much larger territories which today would equate to much of northern Africa. The Antichrist retains control over Africa’s economies after the King of the South finally falls.

Nathan Jones: Back when the Jewish people called out for a king, the old prophet Samuel warned them that a king would take their money in taxes, their sons for war, and their daughters for wives. True to form, King Saul and subsequent kings of Israel did exactly that. Kings rarely remain content with the amount of power they have been given, always craving more.

The Antichrist as king of the world won’t just crave global rulership and the world’s admiration, but he will consume everything he touches. His greedy desire will be to own and control everything. He will take everybody’s money for himself. As we see in both the books of Daniel and Revelation, the remaining people of the world will find that condition unacceptable after a while, and a number of his sub-regents will attempt to overthrow their despot, but with no luck.

Vic Batista: When we look at verse 43 in today’s vernacular, we must consider the coming global ruler’s power and reach. Imagine giving one man all the power of the world’s technology, including full control over the Internet and satellite system. He won’t just have control over the world’s finances, but the world’s technology and ability to communicate as well. He’ll rule the world by controlling his subjects’ ability to connect socially and financially around the world, all for his own power-mad purposes.

Nathan Jones: Don’t forget that when we read about the Antichrist in the Bible, we’re really reading about Satan who has possessed the man. Satan has long desired for the children of God to worship him alone and not the true Creator God.

Satan must have felt that humans had been given more attention or love or something special by God than he and his angelic kind, and so in a rage of jealousy Satan rebelled against God. Now Satan spends his years longing to be worshiped as a god. Satan for the last 6,000 years has been trying to trick the world into worshiping him instead of the one true God. Satan will actually achieve global worship, but only for a very brief amount of time during the Tribulation. By the way we read how Satan manages, not out of love and respect and care for others, but all about self, proves he’s the ultimate narcissist. After a while, people simply grow tired of following a narcissist.

The first segment of this series on the mighty angels of Daniel began with a tragic back story. In the seventy-fourth segment, we’ll end the final chapter in our study of Daniel — Chapter 12.
