Kings Rebel

Nathan Jones: The book of Daniel reveals the Antichrist’s rule lasts only for a short period of time. The angel gave Daniel the Seventieth Week of Daniel prophecy, meaning a seven year time period is all his rule will last. Once that’s over, “Yet he shall come to his end, and no one will help him” (Daniel 11:45b).

Daniel 11:40-45 notes the Antichrist’s power isn’t as absolute as he thinks it is. The Ten Kings beneath him will begin to rebel against him.

“At the time at the end the king of the South shall attack him; and the king of the North shall come against him like a whirlwind, with chariots, horsemen with many ships; and he shall enter the country, overwhelm them and pass through. And he shall also enter the Glorious Land, and many countries shall be overthrown; but these shall escape from his hands, Edom, Moab and the prominent people of Ammon. He shall stretch out his hand against the countries, and the land of Egypt shall not escape. He shall have power over the treasures of gold and silver, and over all of the precious things of Egypt; also the Libyans and Ethiopians shall follow at his heels. But news from the east and the north trouble him, and therefore he will go out with great fury to destroy and annihilate many. And he shall plant the tents of his palace between the seas and the glorious holy mountain; yet he shall come to his end and no one will help him.”

Vic Batista: Nathan Jones: Verse 40 stands out with its mention of “at the time of the end.” That phrase reveals the context as not the time period in which Daniel was living, but another time period, one far off into the distant future.

Nathan Jones: Yes, the key biblical phrases — the end time, last days, latter years — always reference the time leading up to the return of Jesus Christ. The phrase provides a key indicator, a clue, that what we are reading about isn’t history, but future events.

So far, every prophecy we’ve been reading in Daniel 11 pertains to the Kings of the North, which is the Seleucids in Syria, who fought against the Kings of the South, who were the Ptolemies in Egypt. When Alexander the Great’s empire split apart and was divided among his four generals, Seleucid claimed Syria and the Ptolemy claimed Egypt. Over the centuries, just after Daniel passed away, these rival Greek kingdoms kept duking it out for greater power. God’s messenger angel revealed to Daniel quite intricate details about these battles between these two different generals and their descendants, with Israel always stuck in the middle of the fray.

Daniel 11:29 begins the shift by telling the story of a type of Antichrist, who history revealed was named Antiochus IV Epiphanes. By verse 36, the prophecy skips past a great amount of years. As a matter of fact, it’s been over 2,300 years since Alexander the Great conquered and then died. The Kings of the North and the Kings of South who followed fought and long ago died as well. But, Antiochus and these warring kings became the template for a future rebellion, one involving the coming one-world ruler. And so, by Daniel 11:40, we’ve left the Greeks far behind and have entered the future of the Antichrist’s kingdom, a kingdom that has started to fracture.

Vic Batista: I don’t wish the reader to get confused. In the beginning verses of chapters 11, God’s messenger angel revealed two Greek kingdoms fighting across a three century time period, but now the text shifts to a future event that’s based on their historical template.

Nathan Jones: Exactly! I recommend the article The Wars of the End Times by Dr. David Reagan. In his article he lists the nine prophetic wars that will be waged during the end times. Daniel 11:40 begins describing the seventh of the nine wars. Dr. Reagan calls it the Middle East Campaign of the Antichrist.

The biblical context explains the Antichrist will have been ruling the world for almost seven years. He’s getting very near the end of the seven-year Tribulation time period, and the world is just a disastrous mess. God poured out 21 judgments on the world that have left the planet in shambles. The waters will be poisoned, the ecosystem destroyed, many nations have been obliterated, the economy is in the tank, death to half the world’s population, demonic activity running amok, solar flares burning the atmosphere — you name it. The world’s in shambles!

God finally judges the earth for its continued rebellion and heinous sin during the Tribulation. The Antichrist cannot keep up with the disasters, so all his promises will have fallen flat. The people who submitted to the Antichrist aren’t having it anymore. Open rebellion!

In earlier chapters of Daniel, we learned that the Antichrist will rise from a world ruled by a ten king confederacy, with himself being promoted as the top king. By the end of the Tribulation, though, the various kings rebels against his leadership.

The worldwide scope of the Antichrist’s global kingdom means the King of the North rules not just Syria, but likely lands much larger that even includes Russia. Likewise, the King of the South must control lands larger than just Egypt. Likely he is the king over all of Africa. Revelation also mentions the Kings of the East who reside in Asia. And so, three regional kings start a rebellion against the Antichrist and his failed leadership.

Kings March

Vic Batista: The Sixth Bowl Judgment of Revelation 16:12-16 reveals a breakdown in the division of the ten super powers as the Kings of the East march towards the dried up Euphrates River on their way to battle the Antichrist.

Nathan Jones: God actually dries up the Euphrates River in order to make it easier for the armies of the Kings of the East to march across and attack the Antichrist. And so, what’s happening is that the Antichrist in Daniel 11 has begun to put down various rebellions, starting with the rebellion instigated by the King of the South. The Antichrist at the helm of the world’s armies swoops in from the north and subdues the King of the South. In other words, Africa cannot stand against the might of the Antichrist’s multinational army. The King of the North also can’t stand against the might of the armies of the Antichrist either.

Daniel 11:41 reveals that the Antichrist stands the victor over his rebellious kings. “At the time of the end the king of the South shall attack him; and the king of the North shall come against him like a whirlwind, with chariots, horsemen, and with many ships; and he shall enter the countries, overwhelm them, and pass through.”

Daniel 11:44-45 reveals that the Antichrist will become rather worried because he will hear rumors about the Kings of the East marching against his position. “But news from the east and the north shall trouble him; therefore he shall go out with great fury to destroy and annihilate many. And he shall plant the tents of his palace between the seas and the glorious holy mountain…”

This is where we finally have Asia enter into Bible prophecy. Asia, for all the hugeness of its lands, population, influence, and economies, the nations of China and Japan don’t really make it into the Bible, that is until we get to this point in the biblical narrative. The Asians have had it with the Antichrist’s megalomaniacal leadership and they march their coalition army west. They cross over the Euphrates riverbed. In response, the Antichrist swings his army back north, and all these armies converge in the Jezreel Valley in Israel, also known as Armageddon.

Nathan Jones: Yes, the Kings lead their armies to the prophetic Valley of Armageddon. The Antichrist parks his army in what verse 41 calls the Beautiful Land, or the Glorious Land. That’s a poetic name for Israel. The global potentate sets up his headquarters in Israel and readies his men to engage against the rebel armies that are massing against him. The Battle of Armageddon is all set up.

Vic Batista: Revelation 16 and other passages describe these forces converging at Armageddon. I like verse 41 because the Tribulation will have reached it’s final lap as the Antichrist enters into the Glorious Land.

Nathan Jones: It appears there’s no stopping the Antichrist. He’s gained the ultimate power, having united the armies of the world behind him. These splinter group can’t stand up against him and their rebellions are crushed. World War 4 or 5 here. By this point in the Tribulation timeline, the world has already passed World War 3 when the Antichrist conquered the world. In just seven years the world has suffered under massive wars and are up near World War 4 or 5. Huge sections of the planet rebel against the global government. This global government that everyone seemed to have wanted at the onset will only bring heartache, disaster, and countless untold deaths by the end of just seven years.

The first segment of this series on the mighty angels of Daniel began with a tragic back story. In the seventy-second segment, we’ll marvel at the fallacy of Humanism.
