Christian Approach to the 2012 Election: Christian and Democrat?

Can one be a Christian and support the Democratic Party?

On Thursday, September 27, 2012, I was interviewed by host Brian Thomas of Blessings to Israel Ministries on his “God First” program. During the 45-minute interview we discussed how Christians should approach the 2012 election.

Brian Thomas

Brian Thomas: This is a testy, touchy question, but can a person be a true Christian and yet support the Democratic Party?

Nathan Jones: How can anyone support any political entity which removes God from His position of authority, that removes the Bible as our foundational moral principle and the Constitution as our ultimate protector of rights? That removes freedom as a way of life and replaces our national sovereignty with a global government in rebellion against God? That wants to enslave its own population and especially its own poor with government handouts? Which supports putting over 50 million of our children to death? That ends up calling what God calls good evil and evil good? How could any Christian who loves Jesus Christ and accepted Him as Savior support any organization, affiliation, political party, or candidate that supports all of that? I just can’t see how any Christian could.

Brian Thomas: I was having a conversation with a person on Facebook shortly after the Democratic Party had their vote whether to leave the removal of God or not from their platform. I made the comment asking Christians how they could support a party that has taken God out of their beliefs. I said I would not support them. Well, some person responded to me by asking, “I guess you also do not support the public school system because they’ve removed God?” I thought to myself that they’d have to come up with something better than that if they wanted to try to defend their support of a party that excludes God. But, there is no defense for it.

If God is removed from anything there is just no winning. There is no way possible you can’t take God out of anything and expect it to be successful. I would just like for so many people to really open their eyes and wake up to this fact. I think there are a lot of people who deep down inside they do know this, but they just don’t want to accept the fact or face the truth, they want to go along with tradition and stereotypes. Whatever it is they made an allegiance to, whether it might be their race or their political party, they have more of an allegiance to those things than they do to God. That’s just really troubling for me, especially when I look at people who say they are Christians but are voting against their own biblical morality.

Nathan Jones: It’s sort of like supporting a sports team. Take the Cowboys for instance. They’re not doing so hot. But, you know, here in Texas we love the Cowboys. We’ll support them no matter what. No matter how many times they fumble and make mistakes and all that, they’re our home team so we’re going to support them. I think people take politics like sports. They believe such a party is their home team, so they are going to agree with it no matter what they do because they are showing allegiance and loyalty. When it comes to a sports team, it might represent fair play or not, but sports are not really that important. But, when you talk about the morality of God and whether we follow Him or not, then it becomes ultimately important where our loyalties lie. Does our loyalty lie to our favorite sport team? Our favorite candidate? Our favorite party? Or, does our loyalty lie with God the Creator of the Universe, the One who saved us and gave us His moral law? That is the question that every Christian needs to ask themselves.

Brian Thomas: Yes, amen! I’ll just say this as well, and it’s probably not the best analogy, but you and I we are both married men. We support our wives of course, but we don’t agree on every single thing they do. There is no married couple I would think that has ever agreed 100% on every single issue. You sometimes have to voice your differences regardless.

I would at least say to Christians out there, at least if you’re going to stay with a party that is going against God, at least be willing to stand up and speak out against the things that they are doing and saying that are against God. Don’t just go along with them simply because as you stated they’re your favorite team. Don’t take that approach. At least be willing to say, “Hey, we need to change this or else we’re going to be on the wrong side of God’s favor.”

In the next part of Brian and my interview concerning the Christian’s approach to the 2012 election, we’ll try to discern what the United States will look like post-election, and review how a Christian should approach this time in history.

  • Most liberal Democrat "Christians" I know put political ideology ahead of Biblical teachings.

I think they tend to view the Bible in individual verses and not as a whole. Therefore they can take a verse and create their own context for it to match their political doctrine.

Another thing they do is say Bible verses from the OT don't apply to today's world anymore as things are different now.

They also say certain verses cancel out others, such as if a verse condemns homosexuality, the will choose another verse like "love you neighbor as yourself" or "don't judge" as if that makes the verse on homosexuality invalid.

Just a few thoughts on how I believe the liberal Christian mind operates.

  • I said "Another thing they do is say Bible verses from the OT don't apply to today's world anymore as things are different now."

Actually the liberal Dems to the same with the NT also.

  • OBAMA said that THE DAY AFTER lybia terrorist attack, that it WAS, a terrorist. After Romney stressed that, Obama gave a weird look and said "go on.". There was a funny look on Obama's face. But the liberal lady stopped Romney by breaking in. That seemed so unreal to me for Obama to make a mistake like that..Something isn't right.. Any Ideas… If you can watch that part of the debate.. He admitted that the day after the attack he said it was that,, and for 14 days he blamed utube.. Does any body else see the irony of that..

  • Anon,

Obama did NOT say the ATTACK was an act of terrorism.

He made a general statement about "terror" but it was NOT in reference to the Lybian terrorist attack.

Therefore, Romney was right, Obama did NOT cal the Lybian terrorist attack an act of terrorism unitl weeks after the attack.

Obama is a liar who needs others (debate moderators) to save his addlepated behind for him.

  • Anon,

I shouldn't stop there actually in my last post.

Obama did KNOW it was a terroist attack the same or next day but BLAMED IT ON THE VIDEO.

And all his cronies blamed it on the video over and over, as did he.

They are ALL liars who didn't want to admit a terrorist attack took place on the watch of the great annointed one who killed bin laden. That doesn't fit into their agenda of sucking up to and singing kum by yah with the muslim brotherhood. It doesn't fit into their "let's just be nice to them and they'll love us" insanity.

  • I know he didn't in the garden, but his statement at the debate, he said that he did… If you see it reran, you notice that Romney said to Obama,, you said it in the garden? and then he verified again..He really messed up. liek I said.. he has to have a plan… he is too smart to make a mistake like that.

  • I saw that too! I could swear b.o. denied saying it at first… but romney said to lib lady.. to check and see if he really said that…. and she moved them on…. what a trip!!! But anon.. i totally agree with u that sumthin is up here! b.o. has got some scheme cooked up… and as usual lib dems dont see! Or hear!

  • Suzie, that look on his face… when he told Romney to go on..I hope they use that as an ad against him. That woman made sure she stopped his train of thought.. and I think those questions were given to those people.. Obama told one lady, "you did Good"

  • Susie,

You referred to Obama as b.o.

I've long wanted to put a bumper sticker on my truck that says "B.O. Stinks!"

But I'm afraid it would get keyed by one of those "tolerant of others" liberals.

  • I just read a site that has twitters threatening Romney. I know they have ways of tracing them.. but I bet they don't. Billy, I wouldn't even put a sign in my yard.. Obama and his gang have really stirred up a hornet's nest. I look for America to become a real scary place no matter who wins. worse if Romney wins because I don't think these are idle threats.

  • Anon,

You just beat me to it, I was about to post same info:

Despite numerous media outlets attempting to downplay the issue, Twitter exploded last night following the debate with new threats from Obama supporters to assassinate Mitt Romney if he defeats Obama in the presidential race.

  • I think that was the plan for Obama and all his gang. Not too far fetched to believe they want to take over America. I pray every night that God will not let them take America's freedoms. But at the same time I let him know his will be done,, and the way America is breaking away from Israel, It just might be his will. Thank God Jesus died on the cross for our salvation.

  • Anon.. billy… i must admit! Im actually shocked that people are so deadly cruel against romney taking office!!!! … anon.. i DID see the look on b.o.s face!! Man… im tellin ya, this is scarey stuff … and thank God i can say… it is also exciting… COME FOR UR BRIDE YESHUA!
U no im not even going to that sight like i considered doing….. it just freaks me out…
