Psalm 2: The Coming King

PDF

In the previous part of this study on Psalm 2, we looked at the first promise of Psalm 2 concerning the future reign of Christ. Today I’ll look at the second promise of Psalm 2 concerning the future reign of Christ.

A Worldwide Reign

The second promise that the Father makes to His Son in Psalm 2 is a natural corollary of the first. Not only will Jesus inherit the earth, but He will also reign over it: “I will surely give the nations as Your inheritance… You shall break them with a rod of iron” (Psalm 2:8-9).

Jesus is coming to reign. That is one of the most persistent themes of the Scriptures from beginning to end. And again, the redeemed will be joint heirs of this promise. We will reign with Jesus.

These truths were graphically portrayed to Daniel in a series of night visions. In one he saw the “Son of Man” appear before the “Ancient of Days” and receive dominion and a kingdom that included “all the peoples, nations, and men of every language” (Daniel 7:13-14). Then Daniel was told that “the saints of the Highest One” would receive the kingdom and would exercise “the sovereignty, the dominion, and the greatness of all the kingdoms under the whole heaven” (Daniel 7:18,27).

In the book of Revelation Jesus promises that He will give overcomers “authority over the nations” and they will rule over the nations “with a rod of iron” (Revelation 2:26,27).

In Revelation 4, when John is raptured to Heaven and finds himself in the throne room of God, he hears the heavenly host singing a song of praise to Jesus. In the song the statement is made that those who have been redeemed by the blood of the Lamb have been made a kingdom, and “they will reign upon the earth” (Revelation 5:9-10).

The Glory of the Lord

And what will be the purpose of all this? There are many reasons for the Millennial reign of Jesus. God is going to use that period of time to fulfill promises He has made to the nations, to nature, to a remnant of the Jews, and to the Saints. But the fundamental purpose is to fulfill His promise to His Son that He will one day be glorified in history, just as He was humiliated in history.

This promise is a persistent theme of the Scriptures. It is the essence of the Father’s promise in Psalm 2, and it is echoed throughout the Bible, in both the Hebrew Scriptures and the New Testament.

The prophet Isaiah says that when the Lord returns in “terror” and in the “splendor of His majesty,” all proud men will be humbled, and “the Lord alone will be exalted in that day” (Isaiah 2:10-11). The Lord’s name will be honored, and He will be called “Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace” (Isaiah 9:6). He will return to manifest His glory before His Saints (Isaiah 24:23) and before the nations of the world (Isaiah 66:18).

Paul affirms this purpose of the Lord’s return in 2 Thessalonians 1:10 where he states that Jesus is returning “to be glorified in His saints” and “to be marveled at among all who have believed.”

In the next part of this study on Psalm 2, I’ll look at the warnings of the Holy Spirit in verses 10-12.

  • Nathan and all,
I have just posted the following on an emergent supporting blog in the U.K. I have had enough of creeping about trying not to rock the boat. Time is short, I don't want Jesus to say to me 'Why didn't you say something?'
    E.I.

    2Timothy 3:1-17
“This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come …”

Robinswood A.O.G. is a Papist ecumenical pariah in Gloucester, preaching the social gospel of the latest end time heresy of 'Purpose Driven' and/or 'Emergent' so as not to offend the fallen. It is teaching a modern Gnosticism, it is a cult that causes division between families who once used to love and follow Jesus Christ together as their Lord.

It is no more than a 'religious' social club of the liberal far left, having a form of godliness but denying the power thereof while practicing eisegesis; using Scripture merely to support its errant views. They preach ANOTHER Jesus, ANOTHER gospel Galatians 1:6 “I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel:
Vs.7 Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ.
Vs.8 But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.
Vs.9 As we said before, so say I now again, If any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed”.

The Gospel of Jesus Christ, and Him crucified 1Cor.15:1-4 “… how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures…” is the ONLY way to win souls for the kingdom. Jesus completed His mission on the cross when He said “It is finished”. This is not enough for Rick Warren’s franchisees like Robinswood A.O.G. ‘one church’, it is ashamed of the true Gospel, seemingly they see Jesus is incapable of doing what He came to do, so instead they preach a flesh pandering gospel instead.

The kingdom of God is not of flesh and blood, and it is built by JESUS who said “*I* will build my Church”. It is a heavenly structure, not an earthly one. Matthew 16:18. NO ONE can even see God’s kingdom, let alone be a part of it, until they are born again. John 3:3. Unless born of water and the spirit, the unsaved cannot enter into the kingdom of God.vs.5 If the people do not believe earthly teachings about Jesus, they have no hope of believing heavenly things. Vs13.

It is unbiblical to claim the lost are seeking ‘purpose’, they have no interest in God “…there is none that seeketh after God …”. Romans 3:10-18. Robinswood A.O.G. one church is a structure of hay, wood and stubble, built upon a foundation of sand that was the original design of Jesuits in the Vatican to bring people back under the heel of Rome. Robert H. Schuller started the social gospel edifice with his ‘Crystal Cathedral’; Rick Warren has developed it into its present franchise heresy, and false shepherds like Simon Jarvis have bought into its emergent, false grandiose apostate structure.

John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

    Susan E.M. Jakeway Gloucester.

  • God bless you for that Son of Thunder, I needed it! Robinswood Assembly of God is close to where I live and it has rustled my son and his family into its perverted fold.

It is breaking my heart and I am powerless against its deceit. I have never lied to my son and I told him the Truth about Jesus from a baby. Not only me, but his Nan and Grandad and his faithful 'Crusader' teachers as well. Now it appears he considers I was lying to him as he has chosen to believe these strange wolves instead of his mother and the plain teaching of God's Word.
    God bless.
    E.I.

  • I hate hearing that about your family, EI. And I can't stand that Emergent/Purpose-Driven nonsense. The Bible says that teachers will be judged more harshly, and it's unfortunate that these people have no idea what's awaiting them.

  • 2 things 1st i been in the assemblies of God for a long time and with few exceptions (like urs e.i) they`re still a good denomination,2nd concerning the article during jesus` reign there will be no socialist health care. SOMEONE SAY AMEN! The healthcare at that time is mentioned in isaiah 65" if a child dies at 100 he will be considered a curse…the wolf will lie down with the lamb" aint that a better healthcare?

  • Do I detect a political statement in your comment, hartdawg?

I'm sure as a whole, the AoG is a good denomination, but I have no doubt that, once these seeds are planted, the weeds will spread and grow through even the most fundamental of denominations and groups.

  • by the way, my previous remark is not only a political statement but a fact. the "health care" when jesus reigns is found in isaiah 65. and it wont be socialized. if one refuses his reign by 100 he pays himself;)

  • Hello rg, Son of Thunder and Hartdawg
You have all lifted me no end, I have been feeling so isolated. My young friend has been supporting me, but as she is unwell I can’t worry her too much with it. My husband is too upset to say much at all. This has been going on for a long time, and I haven’t known what was wrong. Then at Christmas my son, who normally has such a lovely nature, began to attend Robinswood. So at last I know what is behind it all. He had been being ‘drip fed’ from doing electrical work at a church in Cheltenham that I tried to warn him about.

It started with rebellion a long time ago which I believe was a result of getting hooked on ‘warfare’ pc games. His personality changed, and he became withdrawn, irrational and depressed, he accused me of interfering in his life – which is totally untrue. Now I realise that in a way I was doing exactly that; what I had taught him from a small child, was playing on his conscience, he was having a battle between right and wrong.

Finally he has selected a way to go on with God he knows only too well I would object to. All of this is unsaid, as he has sent me to ‘Coventry’ and refuses to speak to me. I have had the same with other sons, all very bizarre, but I now realise it is the same situation based upon rebellion (against God), their consciences have been bothering them, and that’s my fault as they remember what I have taught them. Thankfully, these are now slowly coming round after years of being inexplicably shunned by them.

So thanks to Nathan’s and others prayers, things have developed, and I have to hope that The Lord will complete what He has begun. Robinswood is at the thin end of the wedge of the ‘seeker sensitive/emergent’ movement, and although God’s Word is misused and made ambiguous by various, personal interpretations; the Bible is being used and as God stands over His Word to perform it, it is my hope that the Holy Spirit will be able to speak to my family about The Truth rather than ‘relative truth’, and bring them out before my grandchildren can be affected.

By the way, I Googled the pastor and found his blog, so I sent him a copy of my objections plus a few extra beside. I have done the same to the couple who are instrumental in my son’s deception; so far no reply!

Thank you; and God bless you all for your support, it has meant such a lot to me. I am so glad Hartdawg’s A.O.G. pastor has remained faithful, he is one of few. Robinswood’s demise has been very rapid. All the ‘old’ members who objected felt obliged to leave after years and years of service, giving way to the young and their need to be entertained – literally!
    E.I. x

  • E.I., I almost feel for that pastor being under your intense scrutiny and massive amount of Bible knowledge. He's picked the wrong family to tangle with their faith! 😉

I'm glad you are addressing the pastor. Who knows, if the Lord uses you to reach him, you could turn a whole congregation around and beyond.

  • hartdawg, I can't believe that you doubt the Obamassiah. Tssk tssk tssk.

EI, I know very well what you're saying. My stepson has went his own way as well, believing that he is "good enough" even though I've shown him Biblically how wrong he is. Unfortunately, he's not even involved in church (fundamental or otherwise!), and is more inetrested in having a "good time" than following his Creator.

  • My goodness Nathan, (massive amount of Bible knowledge) – crumbs, all I know for sure is how ignorant I am. Each time I learn something new I realise just how little I really know!

I would like to hope you could be right about the pastor, I would certainly be willing to give it a go if the Lord so leads. I took Mum to a garden centre today where I have heard he, and his fellow ‘driven’ go to dialogue in the café. I had no idea what I would do if I saw him, other than make my face known and probably give him my ‘Paddington Bear’ look!

I have seen him once before (leaving a café) when someone secretly pointed him out to me. He had no idea who I was, yet when he ‘caught my eye’ he looked like a startled rabbit. I can only think I was giving him one of my ‘Paddington’s’, which I am told is rather un-nerving to behold?

At that time he looked ‘normal’, but judging by his present photo, he has adopted the ‘emergent’ demeanour of very short cropped hair, heavy rimmed glasses, goatee beard and casual gear trying to look ‘cool’. The only thing missing were the earphone wires they use to listen to ‘emergent’ music!

At present I am writing a short article I think the Lord may have quickened to me? If it’s o.k. (I shall ask you) I may send it to him. We shall see!
    Hugs E.I. x

The days we are living in are truly perilous and frightening for the youth. Don’t give up on him; keep on praying and trusting him to Jesus. I have come to realise that’s what the Lord is asking us at times like these “do you trust Me with those you have committed into My care”? Even if we don’t and fail from despair, The Lord remains faithful.
    God bless
    E.I.

  • Hello Hartdawg

I thought you may like to read the following.

    http://archive.constantcontact.com/fs019/1101818841456/archive/1103223649034.html

“What Does It All Mean” by Jan Markell on Olive Tree 24/3/2010

“I believe I have studied under the best of the best teachers when it comes to what the Bible lays out for us in the last days. Many are dazed at the rapid decline of America. The passage of health care wasn't about health care; rather, the socialization of America. America just came under the power of Saul Alinsky. But some of us, while grieved, look at the broader picture. So, this is how I see it.”

i read the one by jan markel (will get to the other one soon) i have a friend who goes to a seeker sensitive church that refers to the message as "a talk" and jesus as "a cool dude". their theology is right but they`d rather you feel comfortable than convicted. at least he`s going somewhere and is hearing something.

  • I have a problem with calling the Creator of the universe and our Redeemer a "cool dude". I used to keep some track of the "emergent conversation" a while ago. I guess they call it a talk now. From what I picked up at the time, they are drifting towards Universalism.

I did listen to a "conversation" between Brian Mclaren and an Episcopalian minister where he was sending up the fundies for believing in God's wrath as taught in Revelation. I could stomach only so much of it before switching off.

James 3:1 Let not many of you become teachers, my brethren, knowing that as such we will incur a stricter judgment.

The enemy of our souls is lulling the believer into sleepy apathy while denying the unsaved The Gospel of Christ and Him Crucified.

Blood, torture, death, sin, wrath, punishment, hell and the lake of fire are too gory for sensitive sinners to hear. The ‘nasty’ bits are bypassed in favour of a ‘love’ gospel embracing the emotional and physical needs of the poor and deprived.

There is no ‘at least’ about it. This is blatant, God defying rebellion against the ‘Great Commission’ AND the call of ‘repent’ to the saved.

Dr Reagan’s present articles are revealing what is needful, and what I call the ‘Driven Emergents’ are choosing to blind themselves in favour of a deathly game of ‘false gospel’ which back slaps their ego’s. Within a short time, Warren, Mclaren, Hybels and their ilk will soon be standing before the Bema seat of Christ, and I see the Lords eye’s flashing red hot with indignation at their soul destroying works. He can hear the cries of the damned cursing the very names that taught them the social gospel, as their false teachers who did not tell them what they needed to hear, breath a sigh of relief while thinking ‘I’m alright Jack, pull the ladder up!’

But they are not alright, they are about to experience first hand great loss at the burning of their ‘sensitive works’. No doubt they will be vessels of dishonour in the ‘Kings Palace’, at least I hope they are, or is there a worse ‘reward’ than being used as a slops container in God’s real Kingdom?

Perhaps Chuck Missler is right? Instead, they could be in outer darkness where there is a weeping and gnashing of teeth. That is a step too far for me, yet I find myself thinking it would be so appropriate if it were to be true. Oh yes, Dr Reagan, works are very important!

Universalism rg? Oh brother, that’s for sure!
    E.I.

  • rg and e.i
a fatty amen to both your statements. this friend told me i should stop telling people they`re going to hell. the very next sunday he went with me to a church and the pastor said "if you dont know jesus you`re going to hell" "hell is hot and forever is a long time. ami trying to scare you? DUH if ur scared dont go there. thats the point" we need more of that.

  • Nathan
If you get to hear of a ministry in the UK willing to spend a little time in verbal support with me over the Robinswood one church heresy, please let me know.

Meanwhile I still need prayer support as things are really getting me down. Its been years now and I wonder how much more I can take? Apart from my mum needing me, there is nothing else!

Will Jesus be much longer do you think?
God bless you and your little family.
    E.I.

  • Revelation 3:10 was written for you in this time, E.I. – "Since you have kept my command to endure patiently, I will also keep you from the hour of trial that is going to come upon the whole world to test those who live on the earth."

Keep on enduring patiently! According to the signs of the time, we don't have much longer.

  • Bless you Nathan!
I suppose I have to accept that The Lord knows my situation and will be my continuing strength. Not being able to actively DO something does not come naturally to me.

I know it is a wicked thing to say, but if the Psalm 83 war began or the Damascus prophecy was fulfilled, I would feel certain Jesus had stepped onto the thresh hold of heavens door to bid us enter!

My mum gets a bit muddled, but she said she heard on tv that trouble in Damascus was brewing??? There again, she may be remembering something I have said about it? I keep checking Sean's site to see what's adoo! Maranatha!
    E.I.
