Revisiting the Fourth Trumpet Judgment Angel
Vic Batista: We’ve been continuing in our series of God’s mighty angels in the book of Revelation and how angels are involvement in Bible prophecy, as well as in our personal lives today. In previous segments, we explored Revelation 8 and the Seven Trumpet Judgments and how these angelic beings were proclaiming God’s judgments that were unfolding. Let’s quickly recap.
Nathan Jones: Angels are God’s messengers. There are 72 references in the New King James Version of the Bible referencing angels. What’s amazing in Revelation is that God kind of peels back the veil that separates the human world from the spiritual world. We get to see how much angels are involved in the works that God is doing, as well as what God will be doing throughout Revelation in the future.
There are 21 judgments found the book of Revelation and they are divided into three categories: the Seven Seals Judgments, the Seven Trumpet Judgments, and the Seven Bowl Judgments. In Revelation 8 we began addressing the Trumpet Judgments. They are called trumpet judgments because an angel is given by Christ a trumpet and each one blows the trumpet and out pours God’s particular wrath upon the world.
Revelation 8:12 reads:
“Then the fourth angel sounded: And a third of the sun was struck, a third of the moon, and a third of the stars, so that a third of them were darkened. A third of the day did not shine, and likewise the night.”
With the Fourth Trumpet Judgment, the fourth angel sounds his trumpet and a third of the sun was struck, and a third of the moon, and a third of the stars, and they were darken so they didn’t shine, and likewise the night. Here we are seeing with the Fourth Trumpet Judgment an example of how the angels serve the Lord as they strike a third of the light. So, during the seven-year Tribulation that is coming upon the world, Revelation reveals how a third of the light will be dimmed. That, of course, means the Tribulation population from that trumpet blast on will have shorter days and the nights will be darker. That is the judgment upon the world that God will give through the Fourth Trumpet Judgment Angel.
Vic Batista: When I look at these incredible scenes as these angelic beings are proclaiming God’s judgments, it makes me realize how we take certain things for granted, like light for instance. Just think of the brightness of day, and the wonders of the beautiful morning sunrise. Now, here the Bible talks about one-third of the light is going to be darkened. How unreal!
Nathan Jones: Can you imagine for years, not just days, but for years and years, the world living in a type of dusk? This appears to be a judgment which continues on throughout the rest of the Tribulation. There is another mention of light later in Revelation which reveals that if the Lord didn’t shorten the days, then mankind would annihilate itself. So, here we see that the Lord shortening the daylight period is not only just a judgment, but also a mercy over all the people of the earth so that they will stop killing themselves all day long. By this point into the Tribulation, we are told that half of the world’s population will be dead from the previous judgments of war, famines, pestilence and sickness that comes after such large-scale wars.
God is trying to get the people’s attention so that they will repent and turn back to Him. Revisiting the Three Woes Angel
Vic Batista: As we see these horrific events unfolding with the first four Trumpet Judgments, some may ask, “Is this as bad as it gets?” But, we realize these judgments are only the beginning in a sense, because as we get into Revelation 9 we see more judgments unfolding as these angelic beings come forth and blow God’s trumpets.
Nathan Jones: After the fourth trumpet sounds, yet another angel in Revelation 8:13 warns:
“And I looked, and I heard an angel flying through the midst of heaven, saying with a loud voice, ‘Woe, woe, woe to the inhabitants of the earth, because of the remaining blasts of the trumpet of the three angels who are about to sound!'”
Here we are presented with yet another angel, and he is flying around in the midst of the heavens, in other words the atmosphere, and he is saying, “Woe, woe, woe!” That’s one woe for each of the three remaining Trumpet Judgments. Here we’ve got an angel warning people that the judgments to come are even worse, if that can be imagined, than the previous Seal and Trumpet Judgments. We’ve read about how a third of the world’s waters will be poisoned, both fresh and salt. A third of the vegetation around the earth will be destroyed. That’s just a few, and these are pretty terrible judgments!
Now we are getting into Revelation 9 and we’re seeing an angel warning people that these particular next three judgments are going to be even worse, if that’s possible to believe.
Vic Batista: That’s why we today should recognize the urgency of the times in which we are living. People think that the times in which we are living are bad, right? We have some famines, we have droughts, and we do have some legit problems. But, they’re nothing compared to what will be occurring during the Tribulation.
Nathan Jones: Correct, we have nothing like those judgments happening today. We even have people who believe that we are now living during the Tribulation. They so totally underestimate the strength and ferocity of the judgments during the Tribulation. Sure, things are bad now, as we’ve got wars, ISIS marching around slaughtering Christians left and right, and growing immorality. Terrible things are going on. And yet, they are nothing compared to what will be happening in Revelation.
So, yes, I can’t even imagine living in such a scenario where a third of the world is destroyed up to this point, and half of the world’s population has been killed by war and the after-effects. Imagine an entire world run by a one-world government with a one-world dictator. Such a world is a totally different reality than the life we are living today.
In the fourteenth segment of our series “The Mighty Angels of Revelation,” we’ll dive into Revelation 9 and the Fifth Trumpet Judgment Angel.
