Major Apostasies with Dennis Pollock (Part 5)

Major Apostasies with Dennis Pollock

Is the Bible not the true Word of God?

In Part 1, we defined apostasy and debunked a few heresies. Now we’ll look into the heretical view that the Bible is merely Man’s record of His search for God.

To help us refute these heresies, we’ve invited one of Lamb & Lion Ministries’ friends, Dennis Pollock, to this week’s episode of Christ in Prophecy. Dennis served as Dr. David Reagan’s Assistant Evangelist for almost 12 years, from 1993 to 2005, at which time he formed his own ministry called Spirit of Grace.

Heresy #6: Denying the Bible is God’s Word

Tim Moore: A pastor in Nashville, Tennessee recently announced that the Bible is not the Word of God. He claimed, “The Bible is Man’s record of His search for God, and therefore it is full of myth, legend, and superstition.” That’s a quote. I can’t imagine a pastor of an actual Christian church making such a heretical statement, but he did.

And yet, I’m reminded of the Old Testament prophet Amos who made this statement in chapter 8, verse 11: “‘Behold, the days are coming,’ declares the Lord, ‘when I will send a famine on the land, not a famine for bread, or thirst for water, but rather for hearing the words of the Lord. People will stagger from sea to sea, and from the north even to the east; they will go to and fro to seek the word of the Lord. But they will not find it.'” With ministers such as these, it appears we have arrived at yet another season of the famine of the Word of the Lord.

Dennis Pollock: Yes, you are right. What an irony, because when in the history of the world have there ever been more Bibles available, Bibles being sold, Christian Bible software, Christian television, Christian this, and Christian that available? And yet, with all of the Christian resources that are available, we seem to be as biblically ignorant as ever. I think the reason is that some people depend more on their favorite group of preachers than they do actually opening the Bible up and reading it.

There’s something to be said about just reading the Bible from start to finish, and when you get done, starting all over again. When you do this you start to take on God’s attitudes the values. We talked about doctrinal drift earlier, and that’s really the essence of apostasy — drifting away from the truth.

When I open up my Bible and read it, it is fundamentally unchanged from the Bible my dad used to read 50-60 years ago. And, when he was reading it, it was the same Bible that people read a hundred years before that. The Bible does not drift. The words stay the same. The concepts stay the same. We’ve got a few new versions, but the doctrines are literally unchanged.

So, the Bible doesn’t drift, and that’s why we have Evangelicals who hold to the Bible tenaciously. How sad that we are looked upon as freaks and are accused of not being on the “right side of history.” They ridicule us with, “Why don’t you just start figuring out that society has changed and so you need to change.” And, I reply with, “My Bible hasn’t changed. It’s the same. So, why would I need to change my view of it.”

The same Bible that tells me, for example, that God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, also tells me how I ought to live. It tells me what’s right and what’s wrong. It gives me an entire code of ethics. I don’t have the luxury that many people do to come up with my own morality. I have to embrace the morality of Scripture.

Tim Moore: We certainly do! To conclude, I would repeat what Jude said. Even as Jude wanted to write to the people he was corresponding with, he said he felt the necessity to appeal to them to contend earnestly for the faith. How do we do that? By being like the Bereans and being grounded in the Word of God.
