Cahn on Trump as a Christian

Jonathan Cahn

Is President Donald Trump saved?

This and other crucial questions about the destiny of America were asked of Messianic Rabbi Jonathan Cahn on our television program Christ in Prophecy. Jonathan is the author of the best-selling books The Harbinger and The Book of Mysteries. He is also the spiritual leader of Beth Israel Worship Center in Wayne, New Jersey. In one of our 2013 issues of the Lamplighter magazine, we featured Jonathan on the cover as one of the prophetic voices God has anointed to warn our nation of impending judgment.

[Note: Jonathan’s answer below has been edited slightly for grammar and clarity.]

National Prayer

Franklin Graham traveled all over the nation gathering believers in Christ who took national prayer very seriously. Graham traveled to every capital in the United States and urged Americans to get on their knees and pray for spiritual revival in this nation. The speech that he gave over and over was one in which he said that we cannot be saved by Democrats. We cannot be saved by Republicans. Our only hope is Jesus Christ. We either turn back to Him, or this nation is gone!

Likewise, when The Harbinger first came out, my ministry started a prayer movement. We urged Christians that we’ve got to pray for America. Our prayer rallies were held all over, even on the Capital lawn. There’s been a tent set up there for over a year and I preach there. Christians have been praying there all the time.

Have those praying been the majority of Americans? No, we are but a remnant. God is so gracious that He will take the prayers of His people, even if it is a partial revival, He’ll provide a partial answer.

We have a choice. Are we as a people going to remain in our self-righteousness and pride and go it alone, or are we going to go with repentance? There’s this clear conflict in Donald Trump, and that’s why God has put a lot of believers all around his administration.

Trump in the Balance

People ask if Donald Trump is saved. It’s been reported that he prayed to receive Christ, but we don’t know what is truly in his heart. Therefore, we are in a balance right now with Donald Trump.

What I see in Donald Trump is Jehu. Jehu was a man who God used to end the violently evil Queen Jezebel. He chucked her out of a window, which gave Israel a reprieve. And yet, Jehu was crazy! The commentaries suggest the guy was ultra-violent. He was full of himself and he boasted often. He epitomized the Hebrew word “shugga” by the way he drove his chariot around. The man was crazy!

Jehu’s race to the throne was also crazy, just it was for Donald Trump. God is sovereign. We know God uses people who don’t even know Him in order to fulfill His will. So, like Israel was with Jehu, American’s are also in a balance with Donald Trump. What will this so-called crazy, narcissistic man do, but do according to God’s will?

City on a Hill

Likewise, America has been used by God awesomely in spreading the Gospel and making the peace worldwide. And so, we’ve got to pray for America with all our heart, but be extra careful that we don’t make America into an idol. God will always respond with, “No, I don’t need a flag. I don’t need that. I also don’t need a Temple. I don’t need that either.”

Christians often blame government for our country’s moral lapses, but don’t realize that the culture has already shifted long before laws were enacted. For example, during his first campaign, President Obama said he was wrestling with the same-sex marriage issue. Well, everybody knew that he was already on one side of that issue. Obama waited until 2012 to announce his support after the public opinion polls had finally shifted. When support became the majority, that’s when he felt clear to end support for the Defense of Marriage act and push same-sex marriage into law.

Ruth Graham stated in the 1970’s that if God doesn’t judge America, He owes an apology to Sodom and Gomorrah. Her husband, Billy Graham, through his ministry reminded us that statement was made in the 1970’s, and look at where we are now.

People often ask me, “Hey, Jonathan, why you are comparing ancient Israel to the U.S.? How can you make that claim? After all, Israel offered up their children to Ba’al.” I reply, “Yes, Israel offered up their thousands, but we have offered up 60 million.” Our own children’s blood stains our hands! How can we as a nation proceed forward without receiving God’s judgment?

How can we expect America to become great again when we are murdering 4,000 babies a day? We are the world’s greatest supplier of pornography. We are the moral polluter of planet earth with our movies and television programs that are blasphemous, violent, and evil. We are the world’s number one user of illegal drugs. The list of our crimes scrawls on and on.

What a difference from the very beginning of America! Preacher John Winthrop came over to the United States and penned that famous description of our nation — a shining city on a hill. He preached that if Americans followed the God of Israel, we would become the new Israel. We would become a city on a hill that all nations looked up to for moral clarity.

But, Americans ignored the next part of Winthrop’s message. He proclaimed a warning that if we turned away from God and instead turned to the gods of profit and lust, which is exactly what we have done, then the curses that came upon Israel will also come upon us.

We have certainly been blessed by God, but to whom much is given much is required. The Prophet Isaiah’s harbinger has been saying that is exactly what is happening to our nation. We cannot escape the laws of God found in Exodus.

  • If aborting 4,000 babies/day doesn’t shock and sicken you, think of it this way:
America aborts almost 3 babies every minute of every day.
How can anyone condemn Nazi Germany for sending Jews to the gas chamber without also feeling deeply ashamed and seeking God’s forgiveness for our killing of our own nation’s children?

  • If President Trump is putting his faith in the words he prayed, then no, he is not saved. Salvation is by faith, not works and that is where Franklin Graham and his father erred, in telling people to “just pray this prayer”. The odd thing is that I can clearly remember when Robert Jeffress was asked if he thought Obama was a Christian and he replied in the affirmative. Really? A Christian would not promote Islam and the wholesale murder of babies.
“For by grace are ye saved through faith, and that not of yourselves. It is the gift of God, not of works, lest any man should boast.” Eph. 2:8,9
A good book to drive home this point is Greer’s (sp?) “Stop Asking Jesus into your Heart”. When people rely on the fact that they prayed the prayer, as if it is a magic mantra, they will continually live in doubt, wondering whether they were sincere enough. And they will pray it again and again, never having assurance because they are depending on their own efforts instead of trusting in Jesus’ work on the cross and His victory over the grave.

  • God is no longer working by nations. He has called out a Holy Nation, not of flesh but born again by the Spirit of God. They are the righteousness of God in Christ. We have clear instruction to the church how to walk, how to behave, how to operate in this world. Where is what you are promoting found?

  • Almighty GOD pray for The united States of America, the time was come for us to pray
for our LORD and Saviour, Jesus The CHRIST pray, pray, pray….our country has crossed
    over the line.
    GOD HELP US!!!

  • Let us not condemn those who want to be sure they are saved. Let’s thank God for knowing our heart and showing such grace and mercy. Sometimes it takes some of us, like me, a little longer to understand such love and grace and mercy that has been shown to one such me.
