Does all this rapid travel we have today point to Jesus coming soon?

On Sunday, January 6, 2013, at the Future Congress 2 Conference in Dallas/Fort Worth, Texas, I was interviewed by host Brian Thomas of Blessings to Israel Ministries on the Rapture Ready Radio Network before a live studio audience. During the 45-minute interview we discussed how the technology that we have today is proof positive that we are living in the end times and so can be expecting the soon return of Jesus Christ.

The Sign of Travel

Brian Thomas: Beside the Sign of Knowledge, what are some other categories or signs that you have concerning technology, especially that we are seeing in today’s technology?

Nathan Jones: The second sign I would say is also part of Daniel 12:4, and that’s the going to and fro. In the end times, according to the angel who delivered God’s message to Daniel, travel will increase. As we get closer to the end times, people will travel to and from more, both to get knowledge and also to quickly get places.

Just think about how much technology has changed in the way of the transportation industry in the last 100 years. This is 2013, and in 1913 people were primarily still using horse-drawn wagons. There were some cars and the plane had been invented not too much earlier, though not quite utilized yet. Most roads were dirt as the highway system didn’t yet exist. In the last 100 years we have gone to the moon. We have a space station up in orbit. For a while we had the Concord which could travel across the ocean in just a few hours. I made it to Israel on one of our Israel trips in 11 hours — half-way across the planet! When Mark Twain went back in 1800’s to Israel, it took him three months by boat and land.

So, the ability for us to travel and rapid transportation has made the globe smaller, which plays into the end times. It’s also a sign that Jesus is coming soon, just like Daniel 12:4 tells us.

Brian Thomas: So many stories cross my mind when as we were discussing the increase in travel. You’ve heard the stories of how many centuries ago when a war had actually been declared as over, men were still fighting and getting killed because the message hadn’t reached them yet. It would be weeks or months later even, and these people were dying simply because communication had taken so long to reach them. Travel was nowhere near what it is today.

We’ve seen great advancement in travel in the last century. I was recently on a trip and remember observing that after we had landed that night, as I looked over my shoulder and out of the airplane window, I could see the lights of the planes as they were coming in for a landing and I counted literally seven planes coming in one behind the other. I was just amazed and thought, “Look how much travel has increased. Just like the book of Daniel said that in the end people will go to and fro.”

Travel and knowledge has increased like no other time in history. To think that this is all taking place right before our very eyes. The rapid growth of transportation is now so common to us that we don’t really think much about it.

I have a grandmother who is 98 years old, and she told me that she was 26 before she ever traveled on the interstate. Now I go to the airport and I see little babies and they are boarding planes, so we’re traveling ever faster and earlier in age than ever before. The book of Daniel said the people who would see these signs would also be the ones who will witness the fulfillment of the end times prophecies given to Daniel.

Nathan Jones: That reminds me, if my grandmother were still alive she would be 101 this month. She told me when I was younger that when she was in her 20’s her family got their first car. At the time you had to wear goggles because the car would billow so much smoke and dust. Picture having to put goggles on before you got into your car. She also said the max speed of her car was 35 mph. Times have changed considerably!

Era of the Internet

Brian Thomas: We’ve looked at the increase in knowledge and in travel, and concerning these increases in technology we also touched on computers and the Internet. When it comes to the Internet, can you share with us a little bit about its history? What was the Internet created for? Today we use it as a worldwide informational tool, but was it always so? What was it originally created for? If you want to, throw out some dates and time frames as to when the Internet was created while explaining the purpose of it.

Nathan Jones: Sure. Well, back in 1988, Al Gore created the Internet. No, just kidding. Al Gore didn’t create the Internet, just claimed he did.

No, actually back in the late 1960’s the major universities wanted to connect their educational computer systems. The universities have always been at the forefront of research, and so they wanted a way to connect their very large computer systems. What was birthed from that venture was Arpanet. The military was in on its creation as well, and so Arpanet developed and grew. All computers pre-90’s were DOS based, so in other words, working a computer involved lots of programming and was very difficult for the average person to use. That left the beginnings of the Internet to stay pretty much within academia and the military.

In the early 1990’s, Bill Gates’ company Microsoft was credited for the revolutionary invention of Windows 3.1, though there is some debate who actually developed Windows first, but Microsoft is given the credit for it. Windows 3.1 was revolutionary because it took something that was complicated with all that coding and turned the user interface into visuals with graphics and icons. As computers got easeir to use, they started catching on. Microsoft really pushed hard for the PC era, sharing their vision for a world where everybody had their own personal computer.

As computers became more common, the Internet during the 1990’s started growing and expanding greatly. People could connect to different information easier through search engines like Yahoo and Ask, which was Ask Jeeves at the time, and other different search engines came out. They made searching the Internet for information so much better and it made the Internet practical and more useful.

Into the mid-2000’s, the Internet went on to become not just information-oriented, but because of hi-speed connections has become more entertainment-oriented. We’ve seen in just the last five years or so streaming television services such as Netflix has changed how people watch TV. The Internet has become our primary avenue of communication. The social networks started blooming. Very quickly the Internet has become our third hand, so to speak, for how we communicate and interact with each other.

The entire world pretty much has some kind of access to the Internet. The statistics show that about 33% of the world population has access to the Internet and are utilizing it. Satellites and cell phones and cell tower technology have all been built in place like a great big nervous system. A missionary to China told us that even though the interior of China is vaste and poor, you still can go anywhere in China and get cell phone connectivity. The Chinese have put cell towers everywhere. So, the Internet has quickly become the major way by which we communicate.

In the fourth part of this series on the biblical signs of technology which prove we’re near to Jesus’ return, we’ll look at the Bible’s next tech sign — the Sign of the Mark.
