Powering Up the Prophet

Vic Batista: Daniel 10:15 reads, “When he had spoken such words to me, I turned my face toward the ground and became speechless.” How could mere words have caused the Prophet Daniel to fall to the ground speechless?

Nathan Jones: Daniel continues having trouble standing before God’s messenger angel. Earlier in verse 8, the old prophet describes upon first seeing God’s mighty angel, “When I saw this great vision, and no strength remained in me; for my vigor was turned to frailty in me, and I retained no strength.” So terrorized was Daniel that he fell into a deep sleep; in other words, he passed out!

The gloriously described angel granted Daniel the strength to stand, but Daniel, upon learning of the great battle between the Archangel Michael and Satan’s forces which was waged in order to allow God’s messenger angel to break through, was too much for the old man. And so, in verse 15 we read, “When he had spoken such words to me, I turned my face toward the ground and became speechless.” The prophet’s strength failed him yet again.

Daniel 10:16-17 records how the Messenger Angel revived the recipient of God’s prophecy once more. “And suddenly, one having the likeness of the sons of men touched my lips…” It appears possibly yet another angel came on the scene, or maybe even the preincarnate Christ Himself, serving to strengthen the old man. If the passage said “the one” I would think this angel would still be the Messenger Angel, but the wording so far makes the passage appear to be reporting yet another entity.

Regardless of who touched Daniel’s lips, he again had the strength to say, “And then I opened my mouth and spoke saying to him who stood before me, ‘My lord, because of the vision my sorrows have overwhelmed me, and I have retained no strength. For how can this servant of my lord talk with you, my lord?'” Notice the lower case lord, demonstrating that Daniel did not believe he was in the presence of God.

Daniel continues, “As for me, no strength remains in me now, nor is any breath left in me.” Daniel requires yet another pick-me-up!

And so, in verses 18-19 explain, “Then again, the one having the likeness of a man touched me and strengthened me. And he said, ‘O man greatly beloved, fear not! Peace be to you; be strong, yes, be strong!'” Since we’re back to “the one” and Daniel is replying to whom he has heard, the context seems to reveal that no additional angel had joined God’s messenger angel.

Verse 19 continues the story of the recharge, “So when he spoke to me I was strengthened, and said, “Let my lord speak, for you have strengthened me.'” Whatever method God’s mighty angel utilized to strengthen the old prophet, it worked. Daniel felt fortified.

And so, the angel in verses 20-21 continues sharing God’s prophetic message.

“Do you know why I have come to you? And now I must return to fight with the prince of Persia; and when I have gone forth, indeed the prince of Greece will come. But I will tell you what is noted in the Scripture of Truth. No one upholds me against these, except Michael your prince.”

Vic Batista: Wow, just amazing! God’s messenger angel reveals all sorts of behind the scenes information concerning the angelic world that shadows our world, including the different forms of angelic beings and different rankings. The Apocrypha mentions the Angel Raphael and other angel names, though we have to take the Apocrypha with a grain of salt. Quite a lot of angelic beings are involved throughout the world.

Nathan Jones: The gist of the angel’s prophetic message confirms to Daniel that God continues to work throughout Israel’s history. God hasn’t abandoned them to the Gentiles. Their Heavenly Father hasn’t neglected the Jewish people, nor today has He replaced Israel with the Church. God to this very day dispatches mighty angels such as Michael and others to serve all His children according to God’s perfect will. God’s will for Israel shall be achieved through a believing remnant of the Jewish people. Salvation has never abandoned Israel.

In the forty-fourth segment of this series on the mighty angels of Daniel, the Prince of Greece blitzes the known world!
