The God of Fortresses

Nathan Jones: The Prophet Daniel provides additional characteristics of the Willful King, better known as the Antichrist.

For one, he’s bent on military conquest. He may not love women, but he certainly loves the god of fortresses. Daniel 11:38 reveals, “But in their [God or gods] place he shall honor a god of fortresses; and a god which his fathers did not know he shall honor with gold and silver, with precious stones and pleasant things.”

The Antichrist will worship a god that has never before been seen, even in our day. So, when some people conclude based on today’s politics that the religion of the Antichrist will be Islam, or Atheism, or the New Age; no, the angel explains to Daniel that the Antichrist will create an all new religion. Whatever this “god of fortresses” may be, we learn from other passages that essentially he worships Satan through himself. After all, the Antichrist is possessed by Satan.

Just as Antiochus Epiphanes, a man who was a type of Antichrist, abhorrently behaved against the Jews causing the Maccabean Revolt earlier in Daniel 11, we read in other passages such as Mathew 24 and 2 Thessalonians 2 and Revelation 13, that he sets up an “abomination that causes desolation” which again causes the Jews to flee into the wilderness. The Antichrist utilizes his False Prophet to creates a “living statue” of the Antichrist and requires the population of the world to worship it. Clearly, this new religion cannot possibly exist as a religion today. This religion is defined by warfare and the worship of Satan through the Antichrist.

The book of Daniel possesses and incredible amount of information concerning the Antichrist. For instance, Daniel 7 describes the Antichrist as the “little horn.” This boastful horn rises up out from the other horns to wage a war of persecution against God’s people. He doesn’t just live to spite the laws of God, but he also hates God’s people with the burning of a thousand suns.

The Antichrist hates both Tribulation Saint and Jew alike. The atrocities the Antichrist commits during the Tribulation will make Hitler look like a schoolyard bully in comparison. Those left behind after the Rapture who then accept Jesus as Savior will feel the tremendous force of Satan’s fury.

Vic Batista: If the book of Revelation reveals the Antichrist worships Satan through himself, then why does the book of Daniel make it sound like he’s an idolater by worshiping a god of fortresses?

Nathan Jones: Daniel 11:36-39 would characterize the Antichrist as an idolater because of his worship of anything but God. He breaks the First and Second Commandments. Verse 38 reveals, “But in their place he shall honor a god of fortresses,” and again in verse 39, “Thus he shall act against the strongest fortresses with a foreign god, which he shall acknowledge, and advance its glory; and he shall cause them to rule over many, and divide the land for gain.”

How does one honor the god of fortresses? In other words, he loves the god of war. This god stands out as one his fathers never honored, meaning a whole brand new god.

The Antichrist honors this god of fortresses with “gold and silver, with precious stones and pleasant things.” In other words, he places all of his empire’s money and attention into warfare. He may have rode into power on the platform of peace and security, but the Second Seal Judgment of Revelation 6 shows it’s not long before the Antichrist plunges the world into a war so horrific that it slaughters a quarter of the world’s population!

Daniel 11:39 substantiates his militaristic ambitions with, “Thus he shall act against the strongest fortresses with a foreign god.”

Back up a bit to verse 36 and we read that this Willful King exalts himself above everything else. So this god of fortresses, this god of war we could say, is in truth himself. The Antichrist religion stands unique as a religion of self-worship. The Antichrist declares himself to be a god among men, which he will actually proclaim in the newly rebuilt Jewish Temple, as foretold in Revelation 13.

The Superman

Vic Batista: Isn’t that who the world is being prepared for today? Sure, I love movies like The Avengers and all the other superhero movies. Are not superheroes gods among men? Doesn’t society long for a Superman to arrive on the scene and fix this broken world?

Nathan Jones: Excellent point! Have you ever wondered if the massive public interest in superheroes isn’t merely a set-up for a real life super hero to fly in and claim that he can bring peace to the world? What a plot! The Antichrist will come in peace, but in truth, he will usher in a tyranny that produces only global wars and mass death.

Vic Batista: Hollywood movies have shifted into mass production with their superhero exaltation. Superman, the Avengers, Ironman — people are just eating these characters up!

Nathan Jones: I once watched a documentary on the history of comic books. The concept behind the superheroes since the last century were the Roman or Greek gods of yesterday. The documentary chilled me with this revelation. We put as much attention, time, and energy into our superhero gods of today as the Greeks and Romans did with their Olympian gods.

We have a society that yearns not for a perfect God, but for an imperfect Superman. We trade the God who is perfect for a flawed man hopped up on superpowers and look up to him to fix all our woes. We’re fashioning an idol in the image of man and bowing to it with our time and money.

The Antichrist will show up, appearing to be supercharged by Satan himself, and will perform amazing miracles. The Bible reveals he’s accompanied by his False Prophet who will perform many signs and wonders; miracles so amazing that the world will not consider them technological trickery. The world will respond, crying out ecstatically, “Superman, save us from the wrath of God!” And they will grant him total, unconditional, and unlimited dictatorial power. But, instead of Superman, they will be getting a General Zod.

Vic Batista: Certainly, people must see how this world is lining up exactly for the acceptance of a superpowered global leader. The last days stage is being set. All the end times players are lining up in order. That is why I believe that the next sign we are waiting for is the Rapture of the Church. The Rapture could happen at any moment, and once it does happen, the Antichrist will swiftly ascend to power to the demands of a people craving a god in their own image.

Nathan Jones: I agree that the stage is perfectly set. After the Rapture, other prophecies need to be fulfilled first that allow for the Antichrist’s ascension, but they can easily happen very quickly and in tandem. Like dominoes, the final events the form the Tribulation will fall into place very rapidly. Disasters that follow the Rapture will cause the the world to accelerate a global government in order to address all of the problems. The Antichrist will rise to absolute power and the world will gratefully trade their freedoms for a fraud.

  • Very insightful article!
After witnessing the euphoric celebration of many around the world during yesterday’s launch of a convertible into space, I agree that the will of the world is ripe for the plucking by a longed for “superhero”. “Superman, save us from the wrath of God!” – Very likely scenario.
Incidentally, with the world’s current obsession with the planet mars, and mars being the ancient Greek “god” of war… adds an interesting development.

  • The pope claims to be God on earth.
Antichrist means instead of the Real God/Christ.
Pope claims to have authority over the word of God.
Three papacy is the woman riding/controlling the the last beastly world power about to rule.
Ten kings and the globalist have given their power to him to set up his world power.
The beast that was, was not, yet is is of the seven (first world powers) and is even the eighth, says the verse.

  • I don’t think you’re reading the Hebrew text right. It’s says “in his [ken] place/position (as the anti-christ) he will honor THE god of [ma’owz] force/strength/fortresses/ strongholds… [abathan] whom his fathers [yadaho] knew not…” verse 39 says it’s a [nekar] “strange, alien, or foreign” god. It doesn’t say it’s a new god that no one knows, simply that this god is a foreign/strange god that neither the anti-christ nor his ancestors knew or worshipped before. So, this could be any of the many pagan gods of war like mars/ares, kali, ogoun, or even odin. If the anti-christ comes out of a christian denomination these gods would definitely be alien to him.
