The Jewish People: Rejected or Beloved? (Part 4)

Special 10

What is the most important prophetic development of the 20th Century?

I asked this question and many others on the television program Christ in Prophecy of Dr. David Reagan, author of one of his newer books titled The Jewish People: Rejected or Beloved? Join us as Dr. Reagan dispels many of the myths surrounding God’s ongoing plan for the Jewish people.

Most Important 20th Century Development

Nathan Jones: Dr. Reagan, you book contains many chapters, including seven chapters with titles like these:

  • Is There Any Hope for Israel?
  • The Middle East Crisis in Biblical Perspective
  • The Most Important Prophetic Development of the 20th Century
  • The Horror of the Holocaust
  • Israel’s Covenants with God
  • The Phenomenon of Messianic Judaism
  • The Hope of Christian Zionism

There’s even an appendix concerning the Willowbank Declaration, which is a great read.

Let’s go back to chapter three where you identify the most important development of the 20th Century. That was quite a busy century! That you identify the most important out of so many events during that time must mean whatever it was, it was really special.

Dr. Reagan: I go into great detail about it in my book, but for time’s sake, let me just provide a brief overview.

I believe beyond a shadow of a doubt the most important prophetic development of the 20th Century was the regathering of the Jewish people from the four corners of the earth. God warned the Jews through Moses that if they were disobedient to Him, He was going to scatter their people all over the world.

That exile came true and happened not just once, but twice. The second exile of the Jewish people occurred beginning in 70 AD when the Romans conquered Jerusalem, and later on under the Second Revolt it was enforced even more.

By the beginning of the 20th Century, there were Jews on every continent of the world, including the United States. There were Australian Jews, there were Latin American Jews, and African Jews, and Asian Jews. The Jewish people had been spread everywhere. And, as God spread them all across the planet, He delivered His promise that, “You will be persecuted,” and they were.

God promised something else, though. He also said, “I will preserve you.” No other people in all of history have been scattered all over the world and yet still had their national identity preserved. Just look in the Bible and you’ll see that everybody was against the Jews: the Babylonians, the Persians, the Hittites, the Moabites, and the Amorites. They were all against the Jews. And yet, where are those nations today? They are all in the dustbin of history.

In contrast, where are the Jews? They’re back in their land. God promised that even in exile, “I’ll preserve you.” And so, God promised that if the Jews remained in rebellion against Him, “I’ll scatter you. You’ll be persecuted. I’ll preserve you. And, one day, I will bring you back into that land.” And, that is just what God is doing in our day. He is bringing the Jews back into the Promised Land.

At the beginning of the 20th Century there were only 40,000 Jews in all the land. By the end of World War II, there were 600,000. Today, over 6 million Jews live in Israel, as many as were killed in the Holocaust. They continue to make aliyah from over 120 nations of the world.

Nothing like this has ever happened in the history of man! I don’t know how anyone can look at this great return and say it is not a work of God. And yet, there are many people who look at what’s happening and conclude that the return of the Jews is merely an accident of history. No! It’s God’s hand. Even the Jews, many of them Orthodox Jews, recognize that it is God’s hand that has brought them back to their land.

God is bringing the Jews back to the land for a reason, and the reason is this — to bring all the nations of the world together against them in order to hammer them as no other nation has ever been hammered before. It’s not because God hates the Jews, rather it’s because He loves them. He wants to bring them to the end of themselves. And, that’s what it will take, so that when Jesus Christ returns, they will return to Him in faith.

In the Old Testament, every time Israel got in trouble, they ran to Egypt for help. In our modern-day times, when Israel gets in trouble, who do they run to for help? The United States. But, the United States is always one administration away from turning against Israel.

There is going to come a time when there will be no one for Israel to turn to for help. And, when they get to the end of themselves, they will finally and rightly turn to God. As the result, a great remnant will be saved, to the everlasting glory of God.

So, God has a purpose for regathering the Jewish people from the four corners of the earth, and so therefore, I believe that this great return stands apart as the most important prophetic development of the 20th Century.

This great return also leads to other prophetic events being fulfilled, such as the rebirth of the nation of Israel, which was re-established on May 14, 1948. Then, the Jews reconquered the city of Jerusalem during the Six Day War back in June of 1967. Jerusalem has been promised by Jesus Christ to be the eternal capital of the Jews. That city has only been the capital of one nation in all of history, and that is Israel. It has never been the capital of any other nation.

On June 7, 1967, when the Jews reconquered the Old City for the first time in 1,800 years, they rushed to the Western Wall and began to weep and wail because of the tremendous significance of what they’d just accomplished. Rabbi Shlomo Goren, the chief Rabbi of the Israeli Army, who later became the chief Rabbi of Israel, came up to that wall with a Torah scroll under one arm and a shofar in his other hand. I’ve seen photographs of this. He blew the shofar and he said, “I proclaim to you the beginning of the Messianic Age.” Now, why did he do that? Because he knows the Old Testament prophecies that promise that when the Jews are back in the land and control the city, the Messiah is going to finally return.

Nathan Jones: So, the return of the Jews to their promised land also means we’re just about to enter into the Millennial Kingdom. I agree with you that most people really do not understand what a miracle it is having Israel regathered as a nation once more. This has never, ever happened in all of human history.

Just imagine the descendants of the Mayans rebuilding the Mayan Empire, or the Aztecs the Aztec Empire. That will never happen, for once a people group has been scattered to the four corners of the world, where they must live in different cultures and learn to speak different languages, they quickly lose their identity. But, a Jew is a Jew, and has been so for thousands of years. Unlike every other people group, who once separated from their home lost their identity over time, the Jews as a whole never did.

I grew up with many Jews when I lived in Philadelphia. Even though they are American citizens, they’ve keep their Jewish identity. Even if they are not religiously practicing Jews, they’ve still keep their ethnic and cultural identities as Jews. The reason the Lord has made the Jewish people so focused on maintaining their traditions over the centuries is because doing so has kept their ethnic identity intact, all so He could regather them as a people group some 1,900 years later. Now the Jews are speaking Hebrew in their own country once again, a language long thought dead to the average Jew.

So, how true! The Jews being regathered back to Israel is a bone fide miracle.

Most Important 21st Century Development

Dr. Reagan: I might add, if you were to ask me what’s the most important prophetic development of the 21st Century thus far, I would say it is all of the nations of the world coming together against Israel, because that is the last of these prophecies concerning Israel. And, that’s where we are in the world today.

Even the United States of America, which has long been Israel’s greatest friend, has began to turn against Israel. First, under the Bush Senior Administration, he demanded that Israel start trading land for peace as an appeasement process, but that has done nothing but whet the appetite of the aggressor. Then, under the Obama Administration, he waged an almost complete rejection campaign against Israel. He just threw our alliance aside and demanded that Israel basically commit suicide by surrendering their heartland. Who knows what future presidents might do to Israel? Well, we do. The Bible prophesies that all the nations of the world, and the Bible is very specific about this, in the end time are going to come against Israel. The United States will be included among those attacking nations.

In conclusion, the return of the Jews back to Israel proves that we are living in exciting times. We are seeing prophecies being fulfilled right before our eyes, and they all point to the fact that Jesus is about to return.

Nathan Jones: Amen! Now that’s a great way to end the story — the redemption of the Jewish people and the return of King Jesus to set up His kingdom. And, it’s all happening during our lifetime!
