Prophetic Types

The United States is not specifically mentioned in end time Bible Prophecy. But, we are there in prophetic type, meaning prophetic symbolism.

Before I reveal our prophetic type, I want to take a moment to explain what I mean when I talk about a prophetic symbol or a prophetic type. A prophetic type is a symbol of a prophecy that is yet to be fulfilled. It prefigures a coming reality. It can be a person, it can be an event, it can be a ceremony, and it even can be an inanimate object.

For example, the Greek tyrant, Antiochus Epiphanes, was a prophetic type of the Antichrist who will appear on the world scene in the end times.

The Old Testament sacrificial system pointed prophetically as a prophetic type to the finality of the Cross.

Every aspect of the Ark of the Covenant was a prophecy about the Messiah. It was made of wood, showing the Messiah would be human. It was covered over with gold, saying the Messiah would be divine. It had three objects inside of it. It had the pot of Manna, indicating the Messiah would be the Bread of Life. It had the tablets of Moses, indicating that the Messiah would perfectly obey the Law of God. It had Aaron’s rod that budded, that indicated the Messiah would be resurrected from the dead. And, once a year, the High Priest went in and sprinkled the blood on the Mercy Seat to indicate that it would be through the death of the Messiah that the grace of God would cover the law of God.

One of the most significant prophetic types in all the Bible is found in the Scriptures concerning Joseph, whose life from beginning to end, was a prophetic type of the Messiah to come. His life began when he went to his brethren with a message from God, just as Jesus came to His brethren — to the Jewish people — with a message from God. Joseph was rejected, and Jesus was rejected. His brothers threw him in a pit to kill him, and just Jesus was literally killed. He was saved from the pit, taken up, and given a new life, just as the Messiah was literally resurrected from the dead. Joseph went to a far country where he took a Gentile bride, just as the risen Messiah departed for Heaven where He is currently taking a Gentile bride — the Church. Ultimately, Joseph serving as a prince of Egypt, revealed himself to his brethren, and they finally accepted him, just as Jesus will one day reveal Himself to His Jewish brethren at His Second Coming when He returns as the King of kings and Lord of lords. Then they will receive Him as their Messiah.

A Type of Judah

I believe America’s prophetic type is the ancient nation of Judah. You will remember that after the death of Solomon, the kingdom of David and Solomon split into two parts with the northern nation of Israel and the southern nation of Judah.

The northern nation of Israel was apostate from the moment it was founded. It was founded in rebellion against God and it continued in that condition for 208 years. It was finally conquered by the Assyrians in 722 BC. During its lifetime, the nation had 19 kings, and not a single one — not one — was considered righteous in the eyes of God.

The southern nation of Judah lasted 136 years longer for a total of 344 years. Eight of its 20 kings were considered righteous by the Lord.

Consider the parallels between Judah and our nation. The people of Judah were given great leaders like Hezekiah, Jehoshaphat and Josiah, just as we have been blessed in our country with great leaders like Washington, and Lincoln, the Roosevelts and Reagan. They enjoyed a great freedom unparalleled in that time, and we have also enjoyed tremendous freedom.

They were granted great prosperity by God, just as we have been. They were favored with abundant spiritual blessings, just as we have been. The Shekinah Glory of God resided in their Temple in Jerusalem. We, too, have been blessed as a nation by God who has been using our nation to proclaim the Gospel all over the world.

I wish I could stop there with this list of positive traits and positive parallels, but I cannot. That’s because we share some of the negative characteristics of Judah as well. One is pride. Judah became proud of its blessings and the people deceived themselves into thinking that they were the ones responsible for their blessings. They forgot about the One who was truly responsible, just as we have in this nation.

Another negative parallel is rebellion. As Judah distanced itself from God, it began to rebel against His Word, just as we are now in the process of doing the same thing in this country. The result for Judah was the destruction of their nation by the Babylonians in 586 BC.

In the second and last segment concerning America’s destiny according to the Bible, we’ll look at the exact sins that bring about the wrath of God on a nation.

  • Thank You Lord for the clear and solid lovers of Your WORD and truths who strive to rightly divide the WORD and speak not to please men, tickle ears, but as those who love your great counsel. How beautifull are their feet who STILL worship at your feet. We love You….We love Your Word of Life, We love Your Kingdom come….let Your will be done in earth as it is in heaven.
Help us to see the more, stay far and away from pride and presumption, give bold utterance to make straight Your paths, for much has become perverse in this hour. Show us how to live in such a time as this and not lose courage or be overwhelmed, or even be overly vexed. You are our wisdom, our joy, our strength, our hope, our Lord and God forever and ever. (I love that “forever and ever”….it’s like a double seal of Promise and comfort.)
THANK YOU FOR THE WORD GIVEN US BY YOUR PEOPLE and we pray for the PEACE (that they look upon Him whom they pierced and wail as for their firstborn Zech 12:10) of Jerusalem, to KNOW the Prince of Peace before He comes as King, Judge and Lion of Judah. Save Your remnant called by Your name, let them prevail to hear, to see, and come back to the God of their Fathers. Thank You for Israel. Thank You for Your Divine selection knowing the end of ALL things from the beginning. You are God and God alone. There is NONE besides Thee and You have been so good and generous to Your peoples. Thank You for being such a Wonderful and Almighty God over us, for us, even holding us from beneath and always taking us through. Yes, “Christ in us the hope of Glory,” is no far off wish, but it is our sure foundation we can stand on. Your Truth makes us free. Blessed be our God and His Christ. Thank You for Your empowering, comforting Spirit given us to lead and teach and guide in Truth. You are surely the All in All…Amen.

  • Dr. Reagan,
I read your newsletter faithfully but find myself rarely agreeing with you. However your article on the sins of Judah was spot on. Not that Judah is necessarily a prophetic type of the US but certainly it does shed a bright spotlight on the sins that bring judgement upon a nation; even for God’s chosen ones, which we are not. How much more will the Holy One judge this nation when He did not withhold judgement on His own!

  • Lamb and Lion ministries has been so helpful on discernment, and upholding the true Word of God.

Everyone Remember, (When the Spirit of Truth comes, he will guide you into all truth.). John 16:13
God will give you another Counselor to be with you forever. John 14:16.

But blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in Him. He will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. Jeremiah 17:7.

  • It seems to me that the conditions that Bro. Reagan disclosed here are too broad and general. They could be applied to most any nation in the world these days and not just to the USA, right?

  • Praise God we live in a time of Grace — for now, His wrath has been appeased. But woe to those still around during the last week of years. His Word tells us this is the time for His wrath & judgment of such folks as are mentioned in the article. It is only because of Jesus that any country is still around.

  • Dan 7 shows the lion with wings. I think that is the US. Russia is the bear and Germany is the leopard. The wings represent the US as the eagle has always represented the US>

  • Yes America was described in the Old Testament.
One occasion which comes to mind is Obadiah 1:4
“Though you soar as the eagle and make your nest among the stars [“Houston, the Eagle has landed.”] from there will I bring your down saith the LORD.”

  • Romans 2:23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory or God, and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.

I can see why America is compared to Judah. Romans 2:7. To those who by persistence in doing good seek glory, honor, and immorality, he will give eternal life. But for those who are self-seeking and who reject the truth and follow evil, there will be wrath and anger. America has the same sins, problems, and rebellion as Judah did.

There has to be repentance and asking of forgiveness, changing of ways for God to bless nations.

  • Judah refused to turn from sin. Isaiah 1:2-4. America has also refused to turn away from sin, immorality, and corruption.

Isaiah 1: 2. Hear me, you heavens! Listen earth! For the Lord has spoken: “I reared children and Brough them up, but they have rebelled against me.

Isaiah was a prophet during the time when the original nation of Israel had been divided into two kingdoms…Israel in the north, and Judah in the south. The northern kingdom had sinned greatly against God, and the southern kingdom was headed in the same direction…..perverting justice, oppressing the poor, turning from God to idols, and looking for military aid from pagan nations rather than help from God.

Political corruption: “They take bribes to pervert justice, letting the wicked go free and putting innocent men in jail.

Moral perversion: Isaiah pointed out the sin of moral perversion…They say that what is right is wrong, and what is wrong is right; that black is white and white is black, bitter is sweet and sweet is bitter. Evil is good, and good is evil.

All of these things are going on in America.
