Confessions Of A Young Earther

PDF

As a believer in a young Earth — called a “Young Earther” — my worldview is based on the idea that the Earth and everything in the universe began a mere 6,000 years ago. It is not even a wildly popular view among Christians, never-the-less though it is a biblical one. But, just where in the Bible does one get the notion that the Earth can only be 6,000 years old?

Dr. Jobe MartinTo find out if the Young Earther Club has a membership of just one — me, I went to Dr. Jobe Martin, former dentist, professor and Evolutionist. Having clearly seen God’s eternal power and divine nature from what has been made (Rom. 1:20), Dr. Martin came to faith in Jesus Christ and a trust in the biblical account of the six days of Creation. He and his wife Jenna Dee have since formed Biblical Discipleship Ministries based in Rockwall, Texas to teach on campuses, classrooms and churches that we can trust the Bible’s account of the Creation and Jesus as Savior.

As a Young Earth Creationist, I believe Creation is just 6,000 years old. From our conversations I’d bet you are one, too. Where then would we get those 6,000 years from?

Good question! I am. Basically, we get that amount from the genealogical tables in the Bible. What do they show? Well, right about 6,000 years is all you can get — 4,000 years up to Jesus and another 2,000 since.

People will speculate that there are huge gaps in the Bible’s genealogical records. “Couldn’t there be hundreds or even millions of years of gaps in the genealogical tables?” Well, no. As a matter of fact, Adam overlaps Lamech, so they are all one family. Adam probably said to Lamech, “Lamech, great-great-great-great-great-grandson, I never should have eaten of that fruit.” And then, Lamech is Shem’s grand-daddy and Shem comes through the Flood. Shem overlaps Abraham by about 50 years, so there are not these huge amounts of years.

Even if there were huge gaps, that doesn’t help with Evolution. Why? Because people are already here. And, what does the Evolutionist say? People were the last thing to evolve. Anyway you look at it, even if there were millions of years of gaps, it would not help with Evolution.

And so, 6,000 years is about all that we can get when we take what the Bible records. God gives us those tables and tell us this one was this old in such detail for a reason — so that we would know how old the Earth is.

What about the supposed caveman — the Neanderthal — how does he fit into human history?

First of all, they were neither cavemen, nor were they monkeys or apes or orangutan. There’s not a single undisputed fossil that people say this is one of the missing links.

Donald Johanson, the guy that found the little 3 1/2 foot tall Australopithecine he calls Lucy, he said about Neanderthal, “Put him in a suit. Put him in a subway in England. Give him a handful of coins with one token and he will pull out the token, put it in there, and get on the subway. You would never know he wasn’t a common European man.”

Most of the time a tooth is found and from that tooth a picture is drawn, and it always looks like some guy humped over and ape-like looking. Well, I think that the Flintstones brought all of this together, okay. You have dinosaurs and you have man and they are all living together. The men look a little primitive with that dinosaur look. So, all you have to do is watch the Flintstones and you will get the truth about how they figure the look of all of this. [chuckle]

I would deny that there is any kind of pre-human species that we would call a Neanderthal, or something of that nature. We would then be working up to Adam, but at Adam starts death due to the Curse from the Fall, and so you can’t have that.

By the way, though, Job in Job 30 says there were people that were living in caves that were cast-offs of society. I think that is what caveman was, he was a cast-off of society.

  • i read job several times but never caught the "cavemen" in ch 30. i read somewhere a long time ago they found some "missing link" what wasnt mentioned however was that it was later discovered it was just a person with arthritas.

  • I never read that in the story of Job either… my version, NIV, says:

"5 They were banished from there fellow men, shouted at as if they were thieves. 6 They were forced to live in the dry stream beds, among the rocks and in holes in the ground. 7 They brayed among the bushes and huddled in the undergrowth. 8 A base and nameless brood, they were driven out of the land."

Then I looked in the dictionary and the definition of cave is…

"a natural underground chamber or series of chambers open to the surface."

And the definition of hole is…

    "a hollowed-out place: as A: a cave, pit, well in the ground B: burrow…"

Sounds to me like a cave and I hole in the ground are pretty much the same thing. So I guess it was there, I just didn't see it before! 🙂

  • I can relate to that. sometimes i feel like I don't make enough time for God in my life and it's something I'm trying to get better at. Please Pray for me.
