Is the Mayan Long Calendar the only factor supporting the end-of-the-world 2012 scenario?

Dr. David Reagan and I recently had the pleasure of interviewing Dr. Mark Hitchcock on the show Christ in Prophecy. Mark is a leading Bible prophecy expert, prolific author who has penned over 20 books on the end times, senior pastor of Faith Bible Church located in Oklahoma, and adjunct faculty member of the Dallas Theological Seminary. He is also a much in demand speaker at Bible prophecy conferences all over the nation.

Dr. Hitchcock was invited to answer questions based on a book he has just published about the widespread speculation and even hysteria that the world will come to an end on December 21, 2012. The book it titled 2012: The Bible and the End of the World.

The Factors Involved in 2012

Dr. Hitchcock: The Mayan Long Calendar is primarily used as the basis of the 2012 phenomenon, but there are several other things that apply as well.

We do know that on December 21, 2012, even astronomers say there is going to be this alignment between the Earth and the Sun with the center of the Milky Way Galaxy for the first time in 26,000 years. The Mayan’s knew that, I mean, that is staggering that they knew that! The problem is they knew a lot about calendars and a lot about astronomy, but they didn’t know the future, and that is the problem with any end time date setting scenario.

Even their ziggurats were supposed to be living calendars. One of the largest ones they have has 91 steps on each of the four sides, and including the top, that equals 365 steps. On the spring solstice of March 21st every year at the big Kukulcán Ziggurat (pyramid) down in Mexico, when the sun hits it at 3 o’clock in the afternoon, the shadow on it looks like a serpent that wiggles down the stairs and comes down to this big serpent head at the base. The Mayans were able to position the ziggurat where that shadow would move to the right place— absolutely stunning!

Besides the galactic alignment contributing the whole 2012 end date scenario, 2012 is supposed to a very active year for solar flares, which is factually actually going to happen.

Then you’ve got Nostradamus. He always seems to be everywhere all over the History Channel. You also have Bible codes. Some people point to computers and the Web Bot Project. They say that points to 2012 as well.

Back to galactic alignment, there really is going to be a galactic alignment of the Earth and the Sun which are going to be lined up for the first time they say in 26,000 years with the center of our galaxy, which means that the sun will temporarily block whatever energy comes from the center of the galaxy to the Earth. Of course, this is where all the speculation comes in about what that is going to cause. Some say the poles of the Earth will flip, which is basically the thesis of the 2012 movie that is out there. The flipping of the poles it is believed would cause worldwide devastations. That only adds a little bit to the fear of 2012 because there is actually something that is going to take place that people can point to.

In truth, the whole galactic alignment event already started several years ago, and in fact the more perfect alignment was several years ago, even more perfect than where it will be at in December of 2012. No expert has put any stock into galactic alignment causing the end of the world whatsoever.

Nothing has happened so far. But, it is one of those things that kind of puts enough little pseudo-science behind it that makes it more believable. Those who support a 2012 end time scenario can say there is going to be this galactic alignment that is going to take place.

There really is good science behind the solar flare idea. The Sun goes through sun spot cycles. Every 11 years there is a sun spot cycle. Some of them are much more dramatic than others. We are due supposedly for a very dramatic sun spot cycle. The last time there was one this dramatic was the last 1950’s, but that was back before we had satellites and a lot of the complicated electrical grid that we have today. And so, we really don’t know what is going to take place. There are some things that could happen related to that, but it is not going to be a mass extinction event.

Solar flares could act like an electromagnetic pulse which would interfere with the electrical grids or satellites and things of that nature. This is legitimate because NASA has actually issued a warning about this, and we need to take these things seriously.

I need to emphasize, I’m not saying that there couldn’t be something that happens in 2012. Every year there are some unusual things that happen, but it is not going to be the Second Coming of Christ and it is not going to be the end of the world. That is the thesis of my book 2012.

Also, the Earth is protected by our atmosphere from solar flares, so it’s not like they are going to erupt and melt the planet or anything. At most it is going to be electrical disruptions. Now, how large they will be, no one knows. If there is enough disruption of the electrical grids it could be significant, but again it won’t be a mass extinction event like so many are saying.

  • Well, I don't feel too comforted, in regards to the solar flare thingy!!

I just went on an Insulin Pump last week, which is a mini computer really. Sure hope it doesn't get zapped! :-/

I never believed in all the 12-21-2012 end of the world stuff, but it sure would be a blessing if the Lord did come then. No more insulin pump…..NO MORE DIABETES!!! :-))

  • i remember the y2k scare, some thought it woukd be apocolyptic, some thought there would only be a few hiccups and others thought it was just another day. if there are to be solar flares affecting electricity then by the time it gets here they will likely have a way to prevent or fix it. i think we may be gone by then.

  • Talk about 'flare ups'! I can hardly believe that France is making a song and dance over the U.S. aiding Haiti by sulking that the U.S. is ‘occupying’ Haiti. They have no infrastructure, no law and order, no organisational abilities, that and more due to the huge death toll and terrible injuries sustained by an already impoverished people. At least the U.S. are actually there and working to overcome the chaos and help bring order to a dreadful situation. Well done those U.S. lads aiming to make a difference – God bless ‘em!

  • EI…

After that insulting and outrageous French comment it forces me to say maybe we shouldn't have "occupied" France in WWII and left them under the rule of Hitler. (Not my true feelings – a sarcastic and yes, angry reply to show how disgusting their comment was).

The BLOOD OF AMERICAN SOLDIERS that was spilled into French soil to free their (I'm soooo tempted to say something else but I'll say) rears is a precious price paid by America and the families devastated by the death of their loved ones.

GOD BLESS the American soldiers that come to the aid of the world in times of tragedy and bring freedom in times of tyranny.

    USA! USA! USA!

  • Since when does the Frenchs' opinion of us matter? These are the same bunch that complained when we invaded Iraq — only because they didn't want us to find out they were in cahoots with Hussein!

  • Son of Thunder said “…only because they didn't want us to find out they were in cahoots with Hussein!”

While snitching to Saddam with the aid of two other governments; causing delay tactics to give opportunity to move the WMD into Damascus and the Beka valley. If SH had not been dealt with, WMD would have been shipped back into his arsenal ASAP = back to square one.

As it is, Damascus is sitting on a massive stockpile of things that make a very loud bang – if this were to happen, guess how much of that area would still exist?

  • son of thunder You know, I would just expect a little more respect from France. WE saved their backsides in World Wars 1 & 2said. . .

    'WE' meaning?

  • son of thunder said…
We, as in the USA. You know, the ones who send their kids off to die for people who are unappreciative

I wondered if you might consider the kids from England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Canada, Australia, NewZealand, S.Africa, Palestine … fighting for France, Belgium, Natherlands … long before the US kids were sent over to join the other kids as canon fodder while their homes and families were being raized to the ground and their lifeline of merchant seaman kids were sunk?

  • "And they cried with a loud voice, saying, How long, O Lord, holy and true, dost thou not judge and avenge our blood on them that dwell on the earth?" Revelation 6:10

Yes, we grieve for all the innocent cannon-fodder we send off to these orchestrated, Imperial, perpetual wars, The Greatest Dog and Pony Show on the Planet.

    http://www.threeworldwars.com/albert-pike2.htm

…and the intended purpose: the final, most horrific world war will create the world's total disillusionment of the 3 gods who didn't show up to deliver; YHVH, the God of the Jews, Jesus, the God of Christians, & Allah, the god of Islam.

And out of the smoke and rubble walks the 'light-bearer', ol' AC, presenting hisssssself to the world as the true god & savior… 1871, mind you. Notice how late in the 'game' Satan shows up with his "prophecy"…

Fortunately… [Fortunately?!?] In God's mercy & predestinated [before the creation] plan it doesn't play out exactly the way these Bozos hope it will.

So, instead of finger pointing, we should pray for discernment since we're all just playing our parts in this end-time of deception. "As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter." Romans 8:36

  • Anon, I don't mean to take anything away from any nation or people (and that includes the French resistance fighters) that fought the Nazis, that isn't what I'm saying, not at all. I know there were many, many young men who died doing the right thing: that refused to roll over for Hitler.

A few years ago I was on a US Airbase and there were some British troops there, and I thanked them for their help in the war on terror. So I do appreciate the sacrifices of anyone who dies or fights for the right thing.

But I, for one, get irritated when people jump down our throats for doing the right thing. We saved the French in both world wars and in helping them pull out of French-Indochina (Vietnam) we got pulled into a war from which we still haven't recovered.

  • Son of Thunder
I am certain you meant no offence 🙂 Its just that much older Brits can be a bit touchy about certain factors during the war. For example, in certain films, there is a tendency to make it seem as if the U.S. with John Wayne won the war all by themselves. We all did it together, with God's help for certain. Praise the Lord!

  • hey satan-lover, how can you say its the first time in 26000yrs if God only made the universe 6000 years ago. go home to your monkey ancestors.
